The Believer [Would stuff like this hurt Santorum in the General Election? (Vanity)]
The Believer: New York Times ^ | May 22, 2005 | no dems

I like Rick Santorum and I've been rooting for him to be "The Surprise" coming out of Iowa in 2012. But could stuff like this short exceprt from "The Believer" by Michael Sokolove, hurt him in the General Election? Is this beyond the pale?

From "The Beleiver" by Michael Sokolove:

The childbirth in 1996 was a source of terrible heartbreak -- the couple were told by doctors early in the pregnancy that the baby Karen was carrying had a fatal defect and would survive only for a short time outside the womb. According to Karen Santorum's book, ''Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum,'' she later developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant. After resisting at first, she allowed doctors to give her the drug Pitocin to speed the birth. Gabriel lived just two hours.

What happened after the death is a kind of snapshot of a cultural divide. Some would find it discomforting, strange, even ghoulish -- others brave and deeply spiritual. Rick and Karen Santorum would not let the morgue take the corpse of their newborn; they slept that night in the hospital with their lifeless baby between them. The next day, they took him home. ''Your siblings could not have been more excited about you!'' Karen writes in the book, which takes the form of letters to Gabriel, mostly while he is in utero. ''Elizabeth and Johnny held you with so much love and tenderness. Elizabeth proudly announced to everyone as she cuddled you, 'This is my baby brother, Gabriel; he is an angel.' ''

The entirety of your post #27. I’ve had just about enough of his bandwith-wasting thugs repeating that he’s the Second Coming.

I like Rick Santorum but I don’t want any “surprises” in October of 2012 that would tilt the election to Obama.

Agreed. Another thing -- as of yet, Obama is the assumed opponent. If Republicans choose their candidate grounded on the assumption that he/she will face Obama, it could be a bad mistake.

Passion and demand for less government is what will tilt the election away from Democrats, as long as Republicans stand for cutting government. The GOP must choose a candidate suited to attract confident votes in and for less government, limited government.

We are the majority, after all. If we weren't, Democrats wouldn't have to cheat to win.

Not just old-school Italians. Irish, too. Wakes held at least an afternoon and a night, sometimes two. At home. Amid whiskey and plenty of food. Sometimes embalmed, sometimes not. Santorums’ child was indeed a member of the family who was brought home however briefly. Which tells me that he wasn’t detritus, wasn’t merely the “product of conception.” I see nothing but love here.

I just don’t want to go the distance with the guy and have a “Herman Cain moment” or a George W. Bush’s DUI revelation like we did the weekend before the Election in 2000.

Anyone who changed their vote away from Dubya because of that stupid DUI thing, is an idiot who probably would have come up with some other excuse not to vote for him. And anybody who let their vote be influenced to the negative by this sad insight into the Santorum private family, is equally an idiot, IM humble O. :^)

I doubt Obama would bring it up. He’ll use the goons instead.

You know that whomever our nominee is, Obama is going to take them apart, limb by limb. I like Rick Santorum but I don’t want any “surprises” in October of 2012 that would tilt the election to Obama.

Obama is a pro vacuum, pro suction, pro abortion baby terminator. The Santorums' reaction to their deceased child is far more reasonable than our current Abortionist-in-Chief's position toward unborn babies.

Texas Gov Rick Perry Is The Only Right Choice For The 2012 GOP Nomination

http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2011/12/texas-gov-rick-perry-is-the-right-choice-for-the-gop-nomination.html

Excerpt below: from Melissa Cloutier a Texan who has a positive opinion on Gov. Perry

Good friend and Texas resident Melissa Clouthier makes the case for Perry, as only someone who has lived under his governance can, here. If we mean to have a political fight in 2012 - and the nation desperately needs one - we can not win it by surrendering for superfical reasons to a Barack Obama who has cited our 57 states and proved himself more gaffe-prone than any potential GOP nominee time and again. Republicans cannot afford to let the media choose our nominee with sound bites, we must select same ourselves based upon their history, record of accomplishment, their principles and sound judgments in office.

Whatever his faults - and each of the current crop of candidates has significant ones - Governor Perry’s signifcant record of success and his vision for America based upon a healthy respect for the Tenth Amendment are and should be the substantive answer to his critics in arguing his case for the 2012 GOP nomination. Put simply, there is no other, or better, viable choice if conservatives and Republicans want to win in 2012, while winning for the right reasons, not simply to defeat Barack Obama by kissing our sister with yet one more Progressive Republican - which is precisely what Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are.

Now, to why I support Rick Perry:

I live under the light hand of the Texas system–a hand that Governor Perry has done everything in his power to make lighter. He cut the size and scope of government even as the Texas population grew faster than any place in the nation. We started a business here with nothing but a credit card. You know how much money we were making a month when we first moved here fourteen years ago? Two thousand a month. Gross. With a baby. Slowly, surely, we built our business and life here.

When we first got to Texas, my husband worked with doctors who were heavily involved in the Worker’s Comp (work injuries) and Personal Injury (car accidents) system. It was rife with abuse. There were rings of lawyers, doctors, and accident fakers who exploited the system. Governor Perry directly took on the fraud and abuse which meant taking on the trial lawyers association. In one day after the law was passed (my husband had long since gone into practice for himself and had a holistic practice), the shysters lost the whole scam. It was beautiful to behold.

And then, this last year, Governor Perry pushed through “loser pays” on lawsuits. I cannot even tell you how much lawyers in Texas hate Rick Perry. And it’s one reason I love his record. It’s also a reason, they’ll fight tooth and nail against him nationally.

This thread is about Rick Santorum. Your Rick Perry sales pitch is off topic on this thread and probably won't win you any converts.

As a native Texan and current resident, I can firmly report that Perry dances to the tune of whoever writes the checks or places people in his inner circle. The crony capitalism he and his administration have allowed to flourish is appalling. He also talks conservative during the primary and election, then things seem to evaporate afterwards.

As a native Texan, I’ve endured Perry’s 25 years of being on the taxpayers’ dole as a career politician. I could never support him for President. His political machine has kept him in power for the past 10 years as Governor, but most Texans know he is an empty suit. We’re not surprised that he can’t remember what he had for breakfast this morning, forgot that the voting age was 18, not 21 and that he thought Solyndra was a country instead of a manufacturing firm. And then, there’s the Debates.......... He has embarrassed the State of Texas in this Primary Process. I guarantee, this will be his last term as Governor.

When the GOP called me for a contribution before Perry entered the race they were so excited about the prospect of him running. However, friends and family who live in Texas had already enlightened me about Perry. They didn’t have to say much to convince me that the GOP needed to do better than Perry.
