FREDERICKSBURG, Ohio -- An Ohio sheriff says a man cleaning his muzzle-loading rifle accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away.
Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly said Tuesday that the accident occurred Thursday night when a man fired his loaded rifle to clean it. He says the victim, Rachel Yoder of Fredericksburg, was nearly 1.5 miles away when she was shot in the head.
No charges have been filed.
Yoder was shot while traveling to her home in adjacent Wayne County, between Columbus and Akron. She was riding alone after attending a Christmas party for employees, most under 18 years old, who work at an Amish produce farm.
Have you heard of the Sierra Bullet company? They have done extensive live fire research and publish the information about external ballistics.
Most other bullet manufacturers do as well.
The US Army also has extensive information available on external ballistics. So does the US Navy. How do you think artillery pieces are laid for indirect fire? Someone, somewhere has to know something about exterior ballistics, and there are entire courses of study on just this subject if one has the desire to learn.
Your commercial 45acp can kill a human graveyard dead at more than 1,000 yds, be careful how you handle it. You won’t be winning bullseye matches at that range, but is is lethal none the less.
Your brilliance is in full display for all to see.
People like you give idiots hope.
Please do not do any research. The embarrassment may be too much for even your stalwart heart to bear.
Oh, and secretly, when no one is looking, you might wish to bone up on the Ferguson rifle, which was rifled -who woulda thunk it-before and during the Revolutionary War.
But then, you already know everything, and I should be listening to your every word.
LOL
See ya.
Ok, you are correct. I’m a new rifle owner in Illinois and can’t even hunt in this State with my stuff, but I do research and I can’t argue things I don’t know(I will bluster at times),. Have a good evening all. I’ll do more research next time.
It must suck to be you.
You obviously know less than miniscule dipshit, but that’s ok we tolerate that here numbnuts.
Pray continue, I am deeply awed.
I will, you’re a joke dummie.
What a treat to be in the presence of intelligence of this magnitude.
Wait, I need to get another beer, before I pull up a chair for a ringside seat to your exhibition of stellar wordsmithing and awesomeness that only a few can equal.
Wow, pulling rank on me BWAHAHA, feeling insecure ? Call the Mods bitch, I’m so scary BOOOOOO, Idiot.

Have one on me friend:)
You provide me with sufficient entertainment.
A am a little disappointed though. I was hoping for a little more pizzaz, so far only fizzle.
However, I can sense that you really have it in you. Come on, show me what you got.
Hey, never take this stuff personal. I was the same way at one time, not that way now, just like to spar, haven’t been on for a while, see you around :)
Your written word says more about you than you can even imagine.
Remaining forever ignorant is a blessing in disguise.I was disappointed in your presentation however.
Oh well, perhaps another time.
Good night, and oh yeah, hope you have a Very Merry Christmas!
I thought it was spar, you don’t have to take it so bad be a sport!
Blackpowder firearms can send a projectile 1.5 miles. My 50 cal Hawkin Rifle fires a 350 grain bullet at 1400 fps with 90 grains of ff blackpowder. At a howitzer level of trajectory that round is going and going. Compare to heavy cartridge bullet loads (such as 45-70) to see how slowly they lose velocity every additional 100 yards.
Why would a fella waste a careful load without shooting it at a target? If he had to just get rid of the load he could have fired it into a soil bank. It is lots of work to unload a muzzle-loader without firing.
You need to study your ballistic tables. A heavy slug loses velocity more slowly than light ones. Yes, a buffalo bullet will be lethal at over one mile. The trajectory will look like a howitzer but it will be lethal.

Zimmerly said the gun-cleaner’s family came forward and his neighbors reported hearing a shot at about the time the girl was wounded.
The man had fired the gun in the air about 1.5 miles from where Yoder was shot, Zimmerly said. State investigators were checking the rifle for a ballistics match, he said.
