WASHINGTON — The man accused of ramming a U-Haul truck into barriers near the White House earlier this week isn't a U.S. citizen, authorities said Wednesday. Sai Varshith Kandula, a 19-year-old from suburban St. Louis, wore an orange jail-issued jumpsuit in his brief courtroom appearance — his first since the Monday incident — when prosecutors requested pre-trial detention. A government prosecutor told the court that Kandula is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident. But later on Wednesday, a Department of Justice official clarified the open-court remarks and said Kandula does hold a green card for lawful, permanent U.S. residency....

TOPEKA, Kan. -- It's the day after election day. While many Kansas voters woke up this morning happy their candidate won, many also got out of bed, shaking their head, disappointed in last night's result. But, one person who doesnt live in the Sunflower State, seems especially upset. "Kansas is dead to me" Conservative social and political commentator Ann Coulter tweeted her apparent dissatisfaction with the Sunflower State Tuesday evening. Now, the tweet just consisted of those five words and didn't say specifically why she was upset, she likely is referring to Kris Kobach's loss in the governor's race and...

Thank you for taking the time to contact me in regard to the election for Speaker of the House. It is an honor to serve the people of Kansas in the United States Congress and I appreciate your input. On January 6th, 2015, the House of Representatives voted to elect the Speaker of the House for the 114th Congress. As you may know, John Boehner was re-elected as Speaker. Speaker Boehner received a majority of the votes with 216 and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) received 164. No other candidate received more than 12 votes. As such, this vote was a...

The media are poring over each and every detail of the life of U.S. soccer team’s heroic goalkeeper. Here’s one they probably won’t mention: Tim Howard is a Christian. Beating the U.S. soccer team in a 2-1 game, Belgium eliminated the U.S. from the World Cup, on July 1. Despite that, the U.S. team still boasted a win: goalkeeper Tim Howard made 16 goal saves during the match, the most in World Cup history since 1966 (when record-keeping first began). ABC, CBS and NBC noted the champion’s popularity – but failed to mention his faith. During the morning segments after...

Attorney General Eric Holder said hate crimes are an affront to what the United States stands for in comments at a memorial service Thursday for three people killed in a shooting at a Jewish community center in Kansas. “Every alleged hate crime, no matter the intended target, is an affront to who we are – and who we have always been – both as a country and as a people,”

re hours after Politico reported on Republican Congressman Eric Yoder's admitted skinny-dipping in the Sea of Galilee in Israel, CBS highlighted the story on its Monday morning newscast. By contrast, the network was slow to report on former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner's lewd photo scandal in 2011. On June 1 of that year, ABC and NBC's morning shows reported on the "underwear uproar," while CBS's Early Show punted on the story. The following day, CBS played up conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart's early role in spreading word of the New York liberal's indecent Twitter pic: "Supporters of Weiner note that it...

FREDERICKSBURG, Ohio -- An Ohio sheriff says a man cleaning his muzzle-loading rifle accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away. Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly said Tuesday that the accident occurred Thursday night when a man fired his loaded rifle to clean it. He says the victim, Rachel Yoder of Fredericksburg, was nearly 1.5 miles away when she was shot in the head. No charges have been filed. Yoder was shot while traveling to her home in adjacent Wayne County, between Columbus and Akron. She was riding alone after attending...

A commercial kennel owner in New York destroyed 93 dogs using a hose connected to a farm engine and pumping carbon monoxide into a makeshift "gas chamber." David Yoder, owner of Black Diamond Acres kennel in Romulus, told a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector during a July 15 inspection that he killed the dogs to "depopulate" the kennel. Yoder said he created an airtight chamber out of a wood whelping box (where nursing puppies are typically housed with their mothers) by fitting the opening with a metal door with a small hole for an exhaust pipe which was attached to...

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Before four southern Louisiana women were murdered by a serial killer, the disappearance of an LSU student during Mardi Gras probably would have drawn little attention. But the case of Carrie Lynn Yoder, 26, has brought in federal, state and local law enforcement officers and raised fears that the serial killer may have struck again.Police stressed that the search is simply a missing-person investigation and that Yoder's disappearance has not been linked to the killings of four women, two of them near Louisiana State University. However, the case has renewed worries among some women who thought...
