Gingrich, Paul Virtually Tied for First Place in Iowa (PPP POLL: Newt-22, Paul-21, Mitt - 16)
The Corner ^ | 12/13/2011 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 12/13/2011 12:13:15 PM PST by TBBT

Results from Democratic firm Public Policy Polling poll of likely GOP caucus goers: Newt Gingrich (22 percent), Ron Paul (21 percent), Mitt Romney (16 percent), Michele Bachmann (11 percent), Rick Perry (9 percent), Rick Santorum (8 percent), Jon Huntsman (5 percent), and Gary Johnson (1 percent). The poll’s margin of error is 4.2 percentage points.

Down in the weeds, PPP notices a couple of factors that might be contributing to these numbers:

He’s [Gingrich] also seen a significant decline in his favorability numbers. Last week he was at +31 (62/31) and he’s now dropped 19 points to +12 (52/40). The attacks on him appear to be taking a heavy toll- his support with Tea Party voters has declined from 35% to 24%. Paul meanwhile has seen a big increase in his popularity from +14 (52/38) to +30 (61/31).

Like I said. Keep screwing around with your pursuit of the "perfect" conservative and you are going to wind up with Romney - or worse - Paul.

Ron Paul, IIRC, always underperforms his poll numbers.

Probably because a large chunk of his supporters are too high to get up off their mom’s sofa, put down the bong, and go vote.

ppp = garbage and any poll that shows Paul at or near the top is most certainly garbage.

They are going to keep attacking ANY frontrunner until they get Romney. The assault on Newt this week is really unbelievable. He was my third choice, but by God he’s better than Willard.

Ron Paul isn’t a conservative, but he masquerades as one, especially at election time.

In a vacuum of real conservatism, in a market that deeply hungers for it, you’re likely to get the closest facsimile.

Either way, the Republican Party deserves everything it is about ready to get, because it has become unprincipled.

I hope and pray the republic can survive it all.

The conservatives Bachmann and Santorum combined around 19% so conservative wing of GOP still has a real chance.

There is no difference between Newt and Mitt and Paul has zero chance anyway. Maybe better Paul to win IA so ethanol subsidy & Amnesty hack Newt is damaged, then Bachmann or Santorum can sweep the south as the conservative alternative. Mitt can keep NH.

There is clearly a path for a conservative. In anycase, the biggest threat is amnesty. If GOP nominee is openly pushing some form of amnesty, it will be passed. Tea Partie shave no role in those negotiations and leftists courts and future admins will fine-tune it. Besides, local boards in CA would legalize 100M illegals who show some sort of shady evicence of being illegal long enough here.

We can try conservative once. We don’t have to push another compassionate establishment amnesty republican.

You do realize Ron Paul isn’t a conservative either, don’t you?

He’s a Libertarian. Which means about half of his political positions are the exact same as Ralph Naders.

Do you consider Ralph Nader to be a conservative? Neither do I. Why then, support someone like Ron Paul that shares so many political positions with Ralph Nader?

there was always an outside chance that Paul could win Iowa.

But even if he does, it means nothing. Romney will win New Hampshire and Gingrich will win South Carolina, then Gingrich will win Florida and it will be over.

PPP is just trying to get Paul as many victories as they can. The Liberals are already plotting an “Operation Chaos” of their own, and planning to vote for Ron Paul in GOP Primaries.

That makes the election win/win for the Liberals.

Keep screwing around with your pursuit of the "perfect" conservative

The fact that so many here don't know what a conservative is gets us to this place. He/she is unelectable, so we must take the lesser of the two evils. hear that often enough and this is where you end up.

Gingrich describes himself, “Realpolitik Wilsonian.”

Meanwhile, support for Paul is on the rise, particularly among younger voters and voters who identify themselves as "new.", Among likely caucus-goers under age 45, Paul leads Gingrich 30-16. The numbers are nearly flipped for caucus-goers over age 45. - Business Insider

IOW - Paul's support is coming from the least likely group to actually get off their arse and go vote.

1. That’s a straw man.
2. Nobody I know of including myself is looking for the “perfect” conservative.

We do however take issue with those who claim to be or are labelled “Conservative” when clearly they are not.

Newt ain’t
Romney ain’t
Perry ain’t

Paul comes close...
The others do register in one or more areas...

Bottom line, this overall is not a good slate of candidates. THAT is the problem. The Republican establishment is doing everything they can to make it easy for the Democrat Party in the next election.

If the Democrat Party finds a way to eliminate Obama - the election becomes winnable for them.

If we have a “real” conservative as the nominee - we win no matter what the Democrat Pary does.

=8-)
