GOP frontrunner Newt Gingrich is garnering more support than ever in this presidential campaign season, with the first national public opinion poll after the Saturday night ABC News Republican candidates debate showing Gingrich with a 16% lead over his closest challenger, Mitt Romney.
The scientific Poll Position survey of registered voters who say theyll vote in their states 2012 Republican primary or caucus produced these results: Gingrich 39%, Romney 23%, Ron Paul 11%, Michele Bachmann 6%, Rick Perry 5%, Rick Santorum 4%, Jon Huntsman 2%, someone else 2%, and undecided or no opinion at 9%. A week ago, Poll Positions GOP horse race poll found Gingrich at 37%, Romney at 23%, Paul at 7%, and Bachmann at 6%. In the new survey conducted last night, the poll questioned 582 registered voters nationwide who said theyd vote in their states Republican primary or caucus. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4%. The full crosstabs for the poll: Poll Position crosstabs GOP horse race 12-11-11. |

Here is Sunday's Poll Position compared to last week's Fox News poll:
Poll Date Sample Gingr. Romney Paul Perry Bachmn. Santo. Huntsm. Undecided/Other
FOX News 12/05 - 12/07 356 LRV 36 23 12 8 5 4 2 10
Poll Position 12/11 - 12/11 582 LRV 39.3 23.3 10.8 4.8 6.1 3.6 1.8 10.3
Gallup daily polls run 20% (undecided or other) for some reason, so they are not well suited for comparison.
Another Poll Position poll taken Sunday seems to explain why Romney and Perry are flat or down: (because of their childish $10,000 bickering in Saturday's debate).
Likely 2012 Republican voters are frowning on Mitt Romneys controversial offer to make a $10,000 bet with GOP rival Rick Perry.
Forty-three percent of them say Romneys effort to make that bet has diminished their view of him. Here is the question we put to registered voters who say theyll vote in their states 2012 Republican primary or caucus: In last nights Republican presidential debate, Mitt Romney offered to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry about whether something was or was not in Mitt Romneys book. Does the offer of that bet improve or diminish your view of Mitt Romney? Heres how they responded: 43% said the bet offer diminishes their view of Romney, 16% said it improves their view of him, 36% said it makes no difference, and 5% were undecided or had no opinion. In the scientific telephone survey conducted last night, we questioned 582 registered voters nationwide who said theyd vote in their states Republican primary or caucus. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4%. The full crosstabs for the poll: Poll Position crosstabs Romney bet.

Weighted 4-Poll Rolling Averages of the latest 20+ Polls listed at RCP [as of Dec 12th] plus YouGov polls 12/3, 11/26 11/19, 11/12, 11/5, 10/29, 10/22, 10/15, 10/08, & Poll Position 12/11, 12/04, 11/27, 11/22, 11/8, 11/1 polls inserted chronologically Also the 11/9 - 11/14 Pew poll was broken into two, (3-day) polls (Example methodology for this chart will be on my profile page)
Much like what the government does with unemployment statistics, this chart represents a 4-poll "rolling average" for the latest 20+ polls listed at RealClearPolitics.com (plus other recent national polls). I also weighted the polls by their size. For example, a poll with a survey size of 1000 was weighted proportionately heavier than an 324 survey size.

Romney’s bet may have been fatal for his campaign.

I think you’re right. Like someone else said, if he had bet a dollar or a bottle of (root) beer, it would have worked.
But offering to bet $10,000 just reminded everyone that he is one of the rich and gives ammunition to people who say he is “buying the nomination”.
I still am not totally sold on Newt, but if Romney folds anytime soon, it’s a whole new race.

I’d rather have Bachmann, but at this point I’ll take Newt if that’s what it takes to get Obowmao out of office before he completely destroys this beautiful country.

People should vote and vote for whom they think is best to lead the Republicans.
But I tend to think if Romney had potential to be the one, his polling wouldn’t show him to always be the bridesmaid.

I do not think anyone here supports willard, unless they be very well hidden. But we still have a vote thing to go, no coronation.

Great map..but I am concerend most of Ron Pauls climb again.....though he’ll never do well enough to take a lead...will he run 3rd party and take enough votes to usher in Obama?... We need all the votes possible...would he be vile and go third party? And if he does will it actually stand the chance of getting that many voters at this stage of the game?

offering to bet $10,000 just reminded everyone that he is one of the rich and gives ammunition to people who say he is buying the nomination. That's exactly my first thought when he said that. I can remember a time where $10,000 was a years wages for me and I worked dang hard for it!
Thus Romney has no concept of what money is to the average man...none....and he even said he had a middleclass upbringing and didn't know what want is... Creep!
Go Newt....do not let this creep crawl back out of the sewer which he comes from!

Maybe Gingrich wins the 2012 Presidential election...
...but come 2016, the Democrats will be nominating Hillary Clinton as the supposed “People’s Choice”, a candidate that will appeal to women voters, liberals, minorities, and independents.
What kind of political strategy will Gingrich use then to attract voters? moderation? progressivism? RINOism? or conservatism?
You know what Gingrich is going to do. You know what the GOP RINO establishment is going to do do. They will both scream that only RINO moderation will get him re-elected.
Remember the above. It’s going to happen if Gingrich is elected.
And the consequences will touch us all, conservatism vanquished, the Tea Party gone, and America lost.
Sad, so sad...

Sad, so sad...You must be a scream at a party. There's no point in investing in defeatism; this kind of handwringing is not merely counterproductive, it's virulently destructive. Only a liberal would encourage us to throw in the towel the way you have.
To: stormhill
How many Tea Partiers did you see in November of 2010 sobbingly wringing towels as they watched the election results come in?
All I saw were millions of Gadsden flags leading the charge of conservatism in America.
Yeah, I’m the life of the party, the Tea Party!

23% STILL for Mittens - even after his disastrous debate? Who are these idiots?
To: JohnBrownUSA
Not being a complete fool, I won't pretend Newt's a conservative. Still, it's wise to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
No, we won't hit a home run with Newt but a triple wouldn't be a bad thing considering the rate of deterioration of freedom the republic is now suffering.
