Silver doesnt quite go so far as to say that it makes a brokered convention or a late-breaking establishment candidate likely, but Im willing to go that far. Theres just no way the Republican establishment lets Gingrich become their nominee. As Andrew Sullivan pointed out today, youre already seeing the anti-Gingrich mobilization among conservative thought leaders: Heres George Will, Charles Krauthammer, David Brooks, Ross Douthat, Tom Coburn and Ann Coulter, just for starters. Theres this Politico story about all the Washington Republicans who hate Gingrich.
Now, I think its more likely that this mobilization leads to a Romney win then a brokered convention or a new entrant. But I think it makes a Gingrich win almost impossible to imagine. And if something once considered so impossible begins to look likely, then correspondingly extraordinary events again, like a brokered convention will become likely, also.

Rush has covered the possibility Occupy wallstreet was preplanned with Romney in mind. Cast Romney as a wall street guy, to focus against. This is who the left wants.
The primary process has largely rendered the brokered convention obsolete. At least as far as the GOP is concerned. The beltway rulers may not like it but the most they can do is shoot themselves in the foot. Which they did in 2008 and might well do again.
Yeah. Did you check out that video link? It’ll do your heart good. Lately, I’ve been finding Reagan videos to be particularly delightful.
As of today, of the current options, you’re right.
Wait ... I thought Newt was the ULTIMATE DC insider!
The only one whose opinion concerns me is Coburn, who said precious little on which to make a value judgment. Will? Brooks? Oh, and Noonan? You’re kidding?
If Romney loses the primaries and they push him in with the convention...the GOP will crumble. The whole thing will appear corrupt and crooked.
Wanna have fun with Klein?
Google “Juice Box Mafia” — and use the quotes.
At this point, every attack on Newt is a blow for Romney and, ultimately, 0bama.
>> If Romney loses the primaries and they push him in with the convention...
Now that would be playing with fire.
This only increases support for Newt. The grass roots HATES the establishment Dims and Repubics.
I am hoping that we don't have a brokered convention because of the effects of the competition we are seeing. Such lack of consensus would really impact the grassroot support that Republican nominees would need to get elected. We will need to unite very strong to defeat Obama’s war machine.
I am also hoping that we don't come to the convention with the delegates deciding that none of the candidates will be acceptable. That would mean that a candidate would have to be drafted at the convention. Such a candidate would need to raise funding quickly to overcome the $billion + war chest that Obama has raised.
We need to understand that whoever is the nominee, they have to be electable. The way the present crop of candidates have handled their negatives, I have great worry that none of them will be electable if they don't start neutralizing those negatives soon.
So far there is only ONE republican candidate that has not run a negative campaign and that is Newt
At the end of the day, voters will vote their pocketbooks and wallets and go for the candidate with the best economic and jobs creation record -— Rick Perry.
Plus he also has the advantage of being a social conservative, a military veteran and a down to earth communicator (gaffs notwithstanding).
Agreed and agreed.
My point really is that we have to do the fighting as well, not just Newt. We have to get out there, and educate our friends, and associates on what is happening, and the necessity for them to pay attention, and participate, and why Newt.
There has been a lot of disinformation over the years. A lot of current disinformation, and out, and out lies, and there will be even more. We have to be at the forefront of the cleanup crew cleaning up the mess spewed by the enemy of our Sovereignty, our Constitution, our way of life, and that is what we are fighting.
It has to be overwhelming, unanimous, thorough, and complete to thwart the Dem, Lib, Socialist, RINO establishment, and regain the system.
What I have seen from Newt is very impressive. It shows that he has learned a great deal over the course of the years in the political arena. Let’s hope he has learned enough so he can convert the negative image people have of him to the positive image he has shown so far to the few who pay attention.
Romney means 3rd party....a strong 3rd party....but hey they do not call us the “Stupid Party” for nothing.
