Israel's immigration ministry stopped running television ads exhorting Israelis living in America to come home after American Jewish organizations complained, the New York Times reported December 2:
One video advertisement shows a Jewish elderly couple distraught that their Israeli granddaughter in the United States thinks Hanukkah is Christmas. Another shows a clueless American boyfriend who does not get why his Israeli expatriate girlfriend is saddened on Israel's memorial day. A third shows a toddler calling "Daddy! Daddy!" to his napping Israeli expatriate father, who finally awakens when the child switches to Hebrew: "Abba!"
"While we recognize the motivations behind the ad campaign," the Jewish Federations remonstrated in a December 1 statement, "we are strongly opposed to the messaging that American Jews
do not understand Israel. We share the concerns many of you have expressed that this outrageous and insulting message could harm the Israel-Diaspora relationship." The Jewish organizations complained after a liberal blogger, Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic Monthly, denounced the ads.

I thought Helen Thomas wrote this one.
I had to laugh at this one. One of the online articles I read about this story showed the clip of this ad. A reader who posted a comment underneath the story said it best (I paraphrase):
"If the guy doesn't respond to his own child when the kid speaks English, then why is 'Abba' napping with an English-language version of The Economist on his chest?"
They always vote liberal, so what does it matter?

Well, as an Israeli Jewish man living in the USA, I can state I understand English (more or less, people make fun of my posts a lot), but if I am asleep Hebrew is certainly more effective.
There’s been an increase in anti-Semitism in America as Obama’s supporters become emboldened. Having a muslim in the White House has been a real boon to their self-confidence.
Well, with “conservatives” like you knocking the 1/3 who vote Republican, I’d be a liberal, too.
I concur.
Well, I don’t know if Obama is a muslim, but he certainly went to a church of “kill the Jooos” for 20 years.
The point of the essay was this sentence:
“The tragedy is that Jews have stopped being Jews because America has stopped being America.”
Excellent essay (as always from Spengler.)
By the way, was the Swedish Abba group really Israeli?
Sorry about that, but the title made me think of Helen Thomas’ “Jews should get the hell out of ‘Palestine’” rant, at first sight. As far as America ceasing to be America, it seems to me that the UN, which from its very beginning served those forces that are against republican-style government and favor totalitarianism, infected the character of the nation too deeply. (Among other factors.)
Sure, if the group Styx are really Greek.
By the way, was the Swedish Abba group really Israeli?
I never heard that. (re: ABBA)
