Former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told ABC News' This Week that he expects to soon supplant surging rival Newt Gingrich and become the Republican favorite.
So if you look at all of these little boomlets, they last about four to six weeks. Newt is in about week three, Santorum said.
So we feel pretty good that, you know, come the middle of December and toward the end of December, as candidates are looking for a candidate they can trust, someone that is authentic, someone who knows what they believe in and why they believe it, and has a record to back up the rhetoric as to what they want to do to change this country, because we do need big changes, well, who has been doing that?
As This Week host Christine Amanpour noted, Santorum tied with Jon Huntsman for last in the most recently conducted Des Moines Register Iowa poll (Iowa's primary, the nation's first, is scheduled to take place Jan. 3). Santorum, however, was non-plussed.
"We're within the margin of error of both Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann, both of whom have had enormous attention by the national media, and have had money and resources," Santorum argued. "Rick Perry is running literally millions of dollars of ads in Iowa, and he is right next to me in the polls."
Although the logical connection between Perry's failures and Santorum's future success was never made explicit, Santorum emphasized the strategic importance of character.
"I think character is definitely an issue," the former Pa. senator said. "I think they have to make a decision based upon the person's entire record. And certainly character counts."
Consequently, I think we have a very good chance of winning Iowa," Santorum said. "We've spent the time in the state, we've talked to the activists
And we'll have people at those caucuses advocating for us because I've been in their county. They know my message. They know what I want to accomplish."
And my experience on this website has made it pretty clear to me that no Gingrich attacker likes to hear that his preferred candidate has anything at all in common with Gingrich.
For instance, did you know that Santorum has always favored a guest worker program? I did, and I'm cool with it, but if I hated Newt, it still might bother me.
I’m with you and so, I suspect, is Mark Levin. He mentioned on Friday that either Bachmann or Santorum are appealing to him. His reason was “character”: what does a President do when all kinds of stuff comes flying at him in the next four years and it will. That is what his new book, Ameritopia, is about.
Right now, Newt is having to soothe his “Pro Life” base; he inflamed the Pro Life crowd by saying that life begins at implantation when every embryology text disputes that saying life begins at conception. He has some heavy back tracking to do...
Santorum also said he made a mistake. Hoffman’s remarks about Newt say a whole lot more about Hoffman than they do about Gingrich.
Tell that to Jack Kennedy...
I thought Thaddeus McCotter or Gary Johnson were next.
I didn't want to waste five seconds of thought crafting a response to your assertion that you'd somehow, "know" something would hurt me when your "knowledge" is sorely lacking in that area. But again, claiming knowledge of things one is clueless about seems to be part and parcel in the Gingrich camp.
Doubt it was a misquote, sounds just like Rick2.
He needs to spend some bucks on a body language coach, his shaking his head NO the whole time he’s staing some position is a dead give away.
Next to drop out.
Maybe I’ll just write in Fred Thompson. He has an equal 0% chance of being the nominee as Santorum.
I too felt very disenfranchised and down right hurt by Santorum (at GWB’s behest) endorsing Snarlin Arlen. I have, myself, been snarky about him here on FR ever since...but...
I find myself forgiving (never forgetting) but realizing the ultimate goal has to be saving the Country. Period. If by some strange quirk of fate, Lil Ricky becomes the nominee (but I CAN see him as a possible Veep) I will once again volunteer. The Specter endorsement; the Penn Hills School District LEGALLY being billed (but just doesn’t ‘look’ right) are NOTHING compared with the crap the Regime is doing to our Nation and our childrens’ futures. NOTHING.
Right now, IMO, we need the pendulum to swing to the right. The far right to correct the damage. Santorum is far right; as is Bachmann. Romney isn’t. Huntsman isn’t. Perry (to me) is GWB 2.0. Crazy Uncle Ron needs to be put in charge of the Treasury Department...And Nootie Patootie is waaaaay too much of an insider. I don’t trust him.
So my list gets smaller and smaller. I will add one more thing for Santorum. He IS very smart...’Gingrich level smart.’ So his slogan should be ‘I’m the other smart guy.’
I'm really having a hard time trying to figure out what your point is here. Are you saying you LIKE it when someone points out to you the many things that Gingrich and Santorum have in common? That makes zero sense. You are supporting Santorum, and you obviously can't stand Gingrich.
Newt was just endorsed by a former US Senator from NH who is very pro life. Catholics are also against abortion. Newt is Catholic
Jack looked the part; and America wanted 'young'; today; well we have only to look at our front runners. And 'young/hot/celeb MO' is not it.
Think Obama has all but killed a heretofore 'popular genre of youthful looks' per winning candidate. We are entering our scariest yet; time in history. And voters want someone who at least, looks like they can help prevent the worst from unfolding. Looking for 'sercurity' perhaps; and want the feeling of some authentic wisdom; at the helm. 'Boy Scout' MO's/looks. . .need not apply.
What did Toomey say about Santorum?
Rich, Just please hang up your used jock strap.
You’re not going to need it anymore.
Get off the field!
Given that being the next primary candidate to have a boom has begun to look like being the next al Qaeda deputy commander to...have a boom...I’m not sure I’d be too keen on it.
I know Gingrich and Santorum have quite a bit of overlap (policy wise)...point it out to your little heart’s content. They also have some stark differences in character, which I don’t mind having pointed out as well. As I’ve stated elsewhere, I’ll vote for Gingrich if he’s the last thing standing against another four years of Obama. Until that time, however, I’m going to support the person I see who best represents my views, objectives and hopes for the direction this country is taking. That’s Santorum.
If you think that there is nothing more disgusting, and horrible to come out about Newty, you are wrong. Stay tuned...........
