Herman Cain, the insurgent populist whose candidacy has been ensnared by allegations of sexual impropriety, said Saturday that he is leaving the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying that the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign."
"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said at an event in Atlanta. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."
Cain's campaign had sent mixed signals as to his future since Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who claims to have had an affair with Cain for more than a decade, went public with her story earlier this week. While Cain has said he has been "reassessing" his candidacy, he also, at times, has been fiercely defiant, suggesting that unnamed enemies have been trying to do him in and vowing to press forward.
"The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out and go away," he said. "I am not going to be silenced, and I am not going away."

Cain.
Newt, Perry, or Bachmann. Newt is the least reliable IMO, but he's ahead (flavor of the month?) and I think he could beat Obama. I think Newt is more reliable than slippery Romney.
I wish Perry would quit shooting himself in the foot. Bachmann seems lost.
OK, now that I've thought through this thing in type, here's where I come out:

Why Sarah?
My family. I don't want them hurt.
We want you Sarah. Sarah, you're hurt!
I'm OK. You go home and grow strong and straight and take care of this country.
We've got things for you to do.
America wants you. I know she does.
SARAH!
SAARRRAAHHH!
COME BAAAAACK!
The LAT is not a credible news gathering organization. They are part of the Democrat-controlled, state-run media and aren't to be trusted.
From what I've seen in the polls (1st choice, 2nd choice etc.) most of the Cain votes are going to go to Gingrich with some likely headed to Bachmann. So my expectation is that Axelrod will wake up and start the attack on Newt. Romney is likely to do the same.
Come again?
its only rigged if its all untrue...i like Hermain Cain and would still support him- but when you have all these accusers, the constant response of “these allegations are untrue” will only hold up so much until you prove they are untrue...
as big a d-bag as he is, clinton was impeached, disbarred and charged with perjury after using the same defense...i am not lumping Cain in with clinton but he (Cain) has gotta come up with something of substance to fend off all these attacks...
Dammit!
You almost made choke to death on a crab puff.
Concise analysis, by the way.
DU’ers exstatic, near orgasmic.
I have been on the Cain Train for months. I’ve been following his campaign closely.
I watched the announcement today and I’m calling B.S. on Mr. Cain.
I now think it’s most likely that there was some hanky-panky between Mr. Cain and Ginger White (and/or some other yet-unnamed woman).
A man who (1) believes our country is in dire straits, (2) thinks Obama is a disaster, (3) is courageous and has a servant’s heart, and (4) is 100% innocent of the charges leveled at him, such a man would not give the speech that Herman Cain gave today.
The speech was not about our beloved nation and this perilous moment in its history; the speech was about Herman Cain.
I’m deeply disappointed in Mr. Cain. Yes, the left and the MSM are evil scum, but Mr. Cain had a rare opportunity to be an American hero and he failed to deliver. Im through with Mr. Cain.
I don’t wish him ill. I just no longer care what he says or does. He is no leader.
I am so sad. My son (16 yrs old) wants the computer to play World of Warcraft and to tell the truth, I’m so down about this turn of events, I won’t argue with him about it. I just wanted to stop in to say that ... I wish this hadn’t happened. He is a good man and would have made a good president. Maybe even a great one. But we’ll never know.
God bless you and your family, Mr. Cain.
There you go again.
Yes, none of the remaining candidates are optimal, and I can't stand Romney (especially since he feels compelled to defend his health care debacle in MA), but they are all individually much better choices than Obama and can most definitely defeat him. Plus, it is still possible for someone else to wind up on the ballot. Now is not the time to ‘go all wobbly’.
Further, we now have a theme that we can preemptively use to protect our remaining candidates. We should state continuously that the democrats were behind the character assassination of a successful black man who, even if some of the allegations were true, did nothing even close to what Clinton did in the White House and lied to America about on public television. We should constantly point out their hypocrisy, and point out that this is the second time in recent history that they did this to a conservative black man (Thomas).
All of this can be our advantage. Let's keep working. If the founders or our nation were as negative about their chances of defeating England in the Revolutionary War, there might not have ever been a USA. Fight harder.
"So you're telling me there's a chance?"
Mark Levin last night said he would be supporting either Bachmann or Santorum. Palin seems to be leaning towards Santorum, for now, but likely won't do anything till much later. Cain's departure will shake things up more than folks expect. Perry may also enjoy a rebound as folks "reassess" (sorry Herman) the new abridged field of candidates.
ONE THING IS CLEAR: WE MUST NO LONGER EAT OUR OWN. WE MUST REMAIN UNITED, AND KEEP THE ENEMY CLEAR: THE DEMON OBAMA, NOT EACH OTHER.
Terrible news, I was a Cain supporter. All that is left now are the RINOs.
But he is a mainstream Republican based on his past acts and current positions.
You can say he isn’t a “true conservative” and we could have a rational discussion. But to say he is a RINO like Olympia Snowe or John McCain or Lindsay Graham is absurd.
I’d say that half of Republicans are to the left of him, and half are to the right. Newt is at the center of the Republican party.
And he can beat Mitt, and then beat Obama.
LOL!
One in a million.
VERY sad :/
I will be writing in Palin now. He was the last chance to have another true conservative.
At least if 0bummer wins, he will take all of the credit for the failure of the once Great Nation instead of us having it because of a RINO in office.
I’d have happily supported Palin before she announced she would not run. Now, not so much.
Doesn’t matter, she’s still young, plenty of time.
