Military source confirms delivery of missiles, according to an AFP report; second official says missiles will protect Syria from 'possible attack from the sea.'

Russia has delivered supersonic cruise missiles to Syria, AFP reported on Thursday.

A military source told the Interfax news agency, “The Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles have been delivered to Syria," although it was not made clear exactly when the shipment was made.

A second Russian official speaking to Interfax said the missiles "will be able to protect Syria's entire coast against a possible attack from the sea."

Really, Russia? Attack from the sea?

Fire and forget, 2.5 X speed of sound. 300KM range. NATO had best be careful about launching carrier based aircraft. This ain't Libya. Syrian arms purchases account for 7% of Russian arms sales. $10 Billion last year alone.

We're not talking merely AKs/RPDs/RPGs here...

Well, although Turkey is the logical choice for basing NATO no fly zone enforcing aircraft, any NATO/US ships in the Eastern Mediterranean would have to factor these missiles into their plans.

I think those are similar to the Sunburn cruise missiles.

This is just another indication that the oriental despots in Russia will never join the Western community of nations.

You make a good point. But surely by now the U.S. Navy has figured out how to deal with this threat. Any ideas? Phalanx?

Russians have never been truly free and wouldn’t know how to act if they suddenly were...

As fast as those cruise missiles maybe they’ll never. Beat the speed of light.

Hopefully our navy has installed some solid state particle beam weapons on board its vessels to deal with this type of issue.

Besides that,I think knocking the doors in with the B-2 bomber would be a better idea. The Syrians or the Iranians would never know what hit them.

I honestly do not know. Maybe some of the Naval experts here on FR can jump in. I Googled up some stuff on the Yakhont and it ain't pretty. Many here on FR tend to put down COMBLOC/Russian weapons. Those of us who have actually been targets of said weapons, never do...

I do know in terms of "counter-battery" fire there is a shortage of Cruise Missiles. Especially after essentially flattening every computer in Libya. In fact we (USA) had to supply Brits with our Cruise Missiles early on.

I played Fleet Command, a Naval game. You have only one chance to bring down the Russkie missiles. They always went after my carriers first. I would get the attacking bomber but then all my birds had to ditch because their flattop is usually in flames. It’s just a game but they use the parameters from all the latest weaponry.

I doubt it had directed energy weapons.

I used to play fleet command all of the time and found that as long as you could detect those cruise missiles early enough you could knock them down with very little loss of your own fleet.

The idea is to place your AWACS in position to detect the missiles without giving away your fleets position.

Same thing go’s with combat air patrols. You have to keep them far enough out where you believe the direction of attack will be.

It works every time.

It works every time.

Until the anti-American commie POTUS/CINC says you can't shoot until your ship is on fire.

Seriesly, Maddy Albright didn't like all the Navy and Marine guys with machineguns all over the ship for security when our Navy ships were in port.....and that got 19 of our best killed in Aden.

Nations are “communicating” with each other via their various placements now of military both land and sea...paying attention to this push of supposedly “protecting” nations, IMO, is simply Russia setting it’s own stage for the
mad rush to the south”....and those who will be with them...trial run or whatever, this has nothing to do with other countries as mush as Russia staging itself.

Phalanx alone could kill it, but with its velocity, the risk of debris damage would be high. The layered defenses on US and allied task forces (SM-2/ESSM/electronic warfare and Phalanx) should be enough to deal with the limited threats from Syria. A mass attack is a worry though.

E-2 Hawkeyes to detect launches. F-18s on CAP to shoot them down with AMRAAMS. Modifications for littoral warfare to allow Arligh Burkes to shoot them down with SM-2 missiles. And the Rolling Airframe Missile to shoot down the anti-ship missile.
