HOUSTON -
Two armed suspects attempted to rob a Denny's restaurant, but ended up fleeing for safety after a shootout with a customer.
The shootout happened at a Denny's restaurant in the 11000 block of the East Freeway around 5:50 a.m. Saturday.
Officials said two armed suspects wearing bandannas entered and attempted to rob the store. The sole customer in the restaurant, a licensed concealed handgun carrier, observed the suspects enter, pulled out his own gun, took cover and fired at the robbers.
Officials said the suspects returned fire and fled the restaurant. The customer followed the suspects, firing as he went. The suspects jumped into a white minivan and fled the scene.

The bad guys should be thanking their lucky stars there was only one customer. Imagine if about 10 ccw opened fire on them.

The CC holder was probably using a compact handgun, firing from cover at some distance, and unaccustomed to the adrenaline rush of this sort of situation. He may have mistakenly attempted a head shot. Or, perhaps the perps were wearing body armor.
But, yeah, we all need to spend more time at the range.
Anyway, not a bad outcome.

Now if we could just have a carry conceal firearms owner just happen to be at a convenience store when a flash mob and rob occurs.

Officials said a white minivan with what appeared to be bullet holes was found later in the 1400 block of Griffen. It had been reported stolen, police said. I bet it was smelly in the van as well...

Sounds like a misuse of deadly force to me.
The purpose of using deadly force is generally to protect someone from death or serious injury. When the bad guys fled, the need to follow shooting all the way was not to prevent immediate death or injury of those within the restaurant.
The only things that might (and I use that word cautiously) be justified is to apprehend a fleeing felon or to if the person with the CCL felt that the crooks fleeing were a significant danger to others.
The guy with the CCL should take more training and be thankful he is still alive. He should also be thankful that he isn't in a location where the DA hates vigilantes more than he hates crooks, as if fairly common in some parts of the county.
Again, what the guy did was brave and probably appropriate up until the point he followed them outside.

When the bad guys fled, the need to follow shooting all the way was not to prevent immediate death or injury of those within the restaurant. Gotta disagree. If you don't terrorize the punks and pursue them with prejudice, they will feel safe enough to try again, with more guns. They need to be killed whenever possible, to reduce the infestation and as a lesson to their friends.

Lots of range time. We’re talking 30 or 40 feet. A good shooter should have been able to put 2 or 3 chest shots into each of them from a concealed steady position. I doubt that a couple of punks robbing a Dennys would have had bullet proof vests on. Range time, range time, range time ....

Thank you, armed citizen, for giving these guys and others like them out there pause for reflection on the fragility of their lives when engaging in such behavior.
