snips:

...."But "there is no path to citizenship in my Tuesday night comment on immigration," Gingrich told Newsmax. "There is a path to non-deportation for certified, very long-term community members but they would not have the right to vote."

The goal of his plan, Gingrich said, is to gain control of the border in 12 months while ensuring that English is the official language of the U.S. government. He wants even faster rules for the deportation of criminals and a guest worker program "outsourced to American Express, Visa or MasterCard to minimize fraud..."

But I do enjoy feeling superior to you.

You enjoy feeling superior to everybody, for no apparent reason.

If you look at the Gingrich/Cain debate on YouTube he explains how FedEx can track billions of packages in real time and you can log in and see where your package is in seconds. He wants to use the technology that businesses have been using for years to streamline and solve government processes. This could be used, for example, to see if people are here legally when they apply for government assistance or private sector jobs.

Illegal immigration is not a simple problem, so the answers are not simple.

The simple answers are amnesty or mass deportation. Newt is proposing amnesty. Not the fast track citizenship that Romney favors, but a long term work permit amnesty. It's a travesty that Newt is proposing this. The way Newt defines amnesty is almost Clintonian. Let me say this simply - amnesty is giving illegals the right to remain in this country without having to worry about being discovered and deported. Newt's weasel words don't change reality - he is proposing an amnesty.

Not sure..but aren’t there already laws on the book stating that very thing in several states? I would go a step further and CHARGE the employers that hire illegals knowingly the full cost of the deportation...including the families. Taxpayers should not have to bear the burden of what could evolve into an enormous expense. IF you hire illegals...you will be fined and pay all deportation costs..period.

Not apparent to you maybe, but...

And thanks for being so very ingenuous. We don't see enough of that these days.

So the longer you’ve been a criminal by staying here for 20 or more years means that they should be rewarded versus the illegal who has only been here for 1-5 years?

Sounds exactly how the District of Criminals does things these days!

To be the smartest man in the room [supposedly], Newt stepped in it and still cannot extricate himself.

A "path to non-deportation" is a form of amnesty -- no matter what word games you play.

McCain tried to dance around the same issue in 2008, and he made himself look foolish by saying that letting certain illegals stay is not amnesty.

==

Stop digging, Newt. Amnesty is amnesty, no matter what you call it, and "a path to non-deportation" is a form of amnesty.

Given that immigration is explicitly a federal responsibility, I seriously doubt it.

Florida has a very early primary (4th or 5th in the nation).

Florida also has lots of hispanics.

Granted. But it may not matter by the time Florida rolls around. I'm not saying that it's Newt strategy, but pinning to much on Florida would almost be Giuliani'esk.

Newt needs to do well in Iowa (1st or very close 2nd). If he fails there, then it may already be over.

You seriously think the SC would take up a case to make all illegals legal? How long did it take to get them to even CONSIDER Obamacare. How is that birther decision going for you? The SC does NOT take cases just because ...

I have seen the Newt haters say a lot of stupid things, but I think this one takes the cake.

It is impossible for the majority of those who have been here illegally for years..the group that concerns Newt. to have managed to exist here WITHOUT comitting an ongoing identity fraud...stolen IDs..fradulent SSNs..you name it..they are committing ongoing felonies..are we goign to excuse that, especially when identity theft is a growing crime...Nope..they gotta go.

I do think we have to do something about “birthright citizenship.”

Perhaps a requirement that both parents have to be here on a non-temporary basis, either as a legal permanent resident, a naturalized citizen, etc.

It’s amazing that we ignore the fact that we have no idea about past history of the illegals that have been here 2 days or 25 years. How many rapists, murderers, gang members, pedophiles, etc. are our neighbors and we have no idea? Our very unprincipled politicians have created this mess and as cruel as it is to send some very nice people back to their country after they have been here for years, it’s still the best solution and will save American lives.

Ugh. “A path to non-deportation” ??

Just the kind of political weasel-wording that sends up alarm bells. The kind of alarm bells in the back of my brain that tell me “do... not... trust.”
