Oregon’s Democratic Governor John Kitzhaber has said he will allow no further executions in the state while he is in office.

Mr Kitzhaber said he was stopping the death penalty as he considered it to be morally wrong.

The move will be a blow to the US system of capital punishment.

The move effectively halted the scheduled execution of convicted killer Gary Haugen, who had waived his appeals and was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Dec 6.

“It is time for Oregon to consider a different approach,” Mr Kitzhaber said in a statement. “I refuse to be a part of this compromised and inequitable system any longer; and I will not allow further executions while I am governor.”

Oregon has carried out two executions in the last 49 years, both during Mr Kitzhaber’s first administration as governor, the statement said.

“I refuse to be a part of this compromised and inequitable system any longer; and I will not allow further executions while I am governor.” So why don't you just leave office and let someone else be dictator for a while?

I wonder how he feels about abortion, or a decision by a religious group to keep degenerates out...

Not signing an execution order does not constitute a violation of the law. It is a separation of powers matter. No court can order him to sign it.

This idiot reporter obviously understands NOTHING about the American system.

Maybe he should look at Texas for his next article.

Not to worry.

Come CW-II, there will be executions...and liberals will be the target.

That’s what hit me odd about this story. I can’t recall ever when someone in Oregon was being executed. Not sure how this will keep Texas from doing what it’s doing.

This is almost like saying NY still not allowing the death penalty.

Having said that, I do think we need to be sure someone is guilty. Kind of like those 2 guys in Connecticut that raped and killed that family. Those are obviously guilty people. But in other cases where it’s one eye witness with bad eyesight and all circumstantial evidence...I’d rather not use the death penalty without being absolutely sure. There are no do overs when you take someone’s life (on both sides of the fence).

Correct, but my point was if he is the top officer of the state, he has the power and persuasion to have most any law fixed that still provides for the ultimate punishment. His method was for the lazy way out.

I hope Oregon residents enjoy paying to keep killers alive for the rest of their lives.

The last execution in Oregon was in 1997. This will certainly halt that ole express train to the gallows that haunts the great Northwest.

It would be difficult to imagine a more fatuous and transparent gesture.

Most of the cases are reviewed extensively....more than ten years on average. Of the cases that are pointed to as examples of the wrong man being executed the so called evidence for the most part is witnesses that some how appear on the scene years later with an account that doesn't disprove put merely cast a doubt. After decades of trying their best the opponents of capital punishment have produced zero cases. Innocent people are dying...that is for sure..at the hands of criminals. Some of whom have been tried, convicted and released from prison!!

Euthanasia, abortion, but no capital punishment.

That's because with capital punishment, unlike abortion, you might kill someone who's innocent.

he considered it to be morally wrong.

To hell with what the PEOPLE consider it ...

“It is time for Oregon to consider a different approach,”

No, it is time for Oregon to consider a different governor ... one who is prepared to set aside his personal feelings and execute the will of the People as enacted by the Legislature, regardless of how odious.
