Hosted by the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, the theme of tonight's Republican presidential debate is foreign policy and national security.
The debate is being held at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
CNN is carrying the debate live at 8 p.m. EST.
Participating candidates are: businessman Herman Cain, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, Reps. Ron Paul (TX) and Michele Bachmann (MN), former Gov. Jon Huntsman, and former Sen. Rick Santorum.
Once again I offer my opinion of debate performance FWIW and as usual probably not very much. So here goes.
1. Bachmann - A, was right on on ALL the issues she was called upon - Pakistan, Obama, immigration, etc. etc. Her best debate performance yet.
2. Romney - B, not his best performance and caught off guard a little by his fellow Mormon, BUT he outshined everyone except Bachmann on the wetback issue. Articulate as usual. Whether we like him or not, he talks a good game.
3. Perry - C. his best performance of the season, not because he did anything good, but because he did nothing bad. Non-specific with some rambling, but at least he didn’t step on his crank.
4. Cain - C-, nothing of substance came out of his mouth; unfortunately he is slowly sinking to oblivion.
5. Paul - D+ the straitjacket remained on again so he remained on the edge on most issues rather than going off the cliff.
6. Gingrich - D, his worst performance so far, even excluding the fact that he flat out shot his wad on the immigration issue. The 25 year family upstanding resident business was properly called Dream Act by Bachmann. His position here made Perry’s state tuition for webacks seem mild by comparison. When I heard him on this, I thought of him on the couch with Nancy (and they were kissing).
7/8 Tie Santorum/Huntsman - D-, Santorum wants to give aid to Africa (got caught as the deer in the headlights) and Huntsman continues his pontification and condescending routine on every subject he came across.
Bachmann is and has been a known and consistent conservative on the issues. She has made dramatic improvements, but unfortunately for her, it is too late. If I came from outer space and watched this debate, other than Bachmann, I would deem Romney as the MOST conservative candidate on the stage based upon answers to questions. You can call him a flip-flopper, you can call him a liar or phony, but his answers on conservatism were equal to or second only to Bachmann. Obviously, that doesn’t necessarily mean squat if he wins the election and gets to the White House.
I recorded the first hour of the debate because I was watching Tim Allen in “Last Man Standing”. The debate reminded me of that show. More and more it is looking like Romney is gonna be the last man standing. He reminds me a lot of Slick Willie.
Gingrich the latest anti-Romney attempted to answer his previous baggage in recent statements. Unfortunately for him, he isn’t flying Southwest so his latest baggage tonight (welcome long term wetbacks) won’t fly free. And guess what: the presstitutes and DimCraps didn’t do this one to him, he did it to himself.
The best way is to bust Mexico chops.
The Mexican Gov is the problem. Our Gov is the problem.
I agree that a Newt/Cain ticket would be very powerful.
It’s amazing what you are accused of just for protecting YOUR HOME! Those who trespass on our sovereignty would SHOOT US and ask questions later should we invade their homeland! What part of SOVEREIGNTY do these apologists NOT UNDERSTAND? What the HELL do they need to make them WAKE UP?
Yes, I wondered if he was legal. He spoke just a few words of English. Since I was not an immigration “cop”, I convinced myself to keep my mouth shut. He had to have electrical training somewhere. One just doesn’t pick up electric cords and start splicing them together without knowing what one is doing if one wants to keep living. The other guy said he doesn’t get around electricity. That problem had to be fixed or the floor wouldn’t get put in that day.
I just think when one considers a specific talented individual, it’s not that easy to kick him out. If he was illegal, okay send him back, but I would have felt bad about it. (Guess Perry would say I have a heart.)
I listen to him. I understand he hates the spotlight. So do I. He can take a moment to understand his power and tell Obama to get bent. Compare Gov. Perry to someone like Sheriff Joe. I want somebody that knows their power and is not afraid to express it.
Seems pretty clear to me. You come here ILLEGALLY you get nothing.
As Jonah Goldberg said, libertarianism is “a form of arrogant nihilism.”
“....Cultural libertarianism basically says that whatever ideology, religion, cult, belief, creed, fad, hobby, or personal fantasy you like is just fine so long as you dont impose it on anybody else, especially with the government.
... Just remember: Keep it to yourself if you can...the flip side of this is that cultural libertarianism is essentially a form of arrogant nihilism. There are no universal truths or even group truths (i.e., the authority of tradition, patriotism, etc.) only personal ones...We can pick from across the vast menu of human diversity from all religions and cultures, real and imagined until we find one that fits our own personal preferences....
You dont turn children into responsible adults by giving them absolute freedom. You foster good character by limiting freedom, and by channeling energies into the most productive avenues. Thats what all good schools, good families, and good societies do. The Boy Scouts dont throw a pocketknife to a kid and say, Knock yourself out, kid. Ill be back in a couple hours. The cultural libertarians want to do precisely that.”
~Jonah Goldberg, 2001, National Review Online, “Freedom Kills”
And what about the ILLEGITIMATE votes of illegals? The ILLEGITIMATE citizenship of the children of illegal aliens? You have no interest in even challenging these?
We do it the other way around in Texas.
Go to ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE CIVILIZED WORLD.... ILLEGALLY!!!!... you get NOTHING... if you are lucky. If you are unlucky YOU GET CHARGED WITH CRIMES AND GET JAIL TIME! What the heck is wrong with FR people??? I am completely confused, I thought this was a site for CONSERVATIVES who believe in our CONSTITUTION and LAWS?????? WTH!!!
My workplace has a Mexican who refers to himself as Puerta Rican..though he clearly is not. I have oftentimes wondered about him. But I have to say he is one heck of a worker and goes well beyond the requirements of his position. Much pride in what he does. Great personality and gets along wonderful with everyone.
I do think that most of the Hispanics are hard workers and most are good at what they do from what I have seen. In fact they could teach our youth what it is to work!
Perry is a bit legalistic. In his redneck
way.
Maybe you should report everybody to Admin Moderator and just be done with it.
I don’t have a hard line on any of the candidates but I still have a Cain-Newt push. There is no reason for me to change that. I pay attention to them all and we have a long way to go. FReepers will pick until the cows come home. I love it.
Take a look at this... troll. I responded once to it’s post and three responses trying to engage me in it’s fantasy... amazing chutzpah!
And again, show me where he SPECIFICALLY said he wouldn’t deport them. While you’re at it tell me where the definition of “reasonable” means they get to stay. I don’t particularly care about your tagline. I’d also like to know where the definition of NOT amnesty means “let them stay”. Otherwise you’re simply making assumptions based on what you think he means when the language is pretty clear. I realize we’re all used to politicians that speak out of both sides of their mouths but Cain isn’t one of them. Repeating the same words back to me for the 3rd or 4th time does NOT make you correct. I want to see where Cain said the same thing Newt said tonight. Mind you, I think Newt is being practical even if it will most likely make his poll numbers drop but that doesn’t mean their 2 policies are the same. However, it is fair to say Cain’s isn’t fleshed out enough to know whether he’s talking about amnesty.

Sing it sister! Let’s hear all about it! /s
Yes...let’s do get that leader...and while we’re doing it expose Obama for what he is.
