Rift Over Tim Tebow Custom "Jesus" Jerseys

He's the model citizen, the guy you want your daughter to date, yet Tim Tebow can't help being the most polarizing figure in all of professional sports.

And during the upcoming holiday shopping season, Tebow is going to get even more controversial -- once again without any action on his part.

A handful of Denver fans have decided a customized Tim Tebow jersey would make for the perfect Christmas gift. What could possibly be troubling about that? A whole lot, depending on who you ask.

Rather than have the last name "Tebow" on the back of the Broncos jersey, these fans have placed "Jesus" above Tebow's No. 15.

Not everyone thinks it's appropriate. Some fans told CNN (via KTVQ) that the new custom apparel is blasphemous.

"Sports is one thing, and Jesus is another thing," Traci Yown, a mom Christmas shopping for her son told the network. "I like to have their names, their last names on the jerseys. I'm a Christian, but I mean I wouldn't want people going around having Jesus on the back of their jerseys."

Give thanks to the Lord in all things, for this is His will for you in Christ Jesus. In that vein, the other team should be praying too.

I love it when the media writes polarizing articles and then blames the target.

Right on the mark!

Denver plays Christmas eve. So if people who like Tebow want to put Jesus on his jersey more power to them. I think they are not even closely saying Tebow is Jesus just that Tebow is not afraid to say he loves Jesus.

So you are saying that I have to buy into commercialism to be saved?

Not one bit. But just because others don't consider Jesus to be too taboo to have his name on a football jersey doesn't mean they won't be saved as well.

The commercialism of the name “Jesus” is akin to profaning (making common rather than sacred) the name of my Lord. In my view it is a blasphemy and violation of the “thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain”. But then I also wonder if the Lord’s day is not also profaned by football; when is should be set aside for worship and fellowship of the body.

Practice as you wish, but that view isn't too far off from Muslims freaking out when Mohammed is portrayed as a cartoon.

And without the "commercialism" of Jesus, it would be mighty hard to buy a Bible.

Before I give my opinion on this, I just want everyone to know that I am crazy Sold-Out to Jesus. I am not perfect and I will NEVER be, but I am forgiven. (Thank you Jesus)

Now, that being said, this is THE stupidest thing to get mad about. This should in NO way be controversial. This jersey does NOT say “I AM JESUS.”
The bible tells us in Luke 9:23, that if we want to follow and be His disciple, we MUST
a. Deny ourselves (our identity)
b. Take up His cross (His identity)
c. Follow

Tebow is doing JUST that. He has denied his name/identity (TEBOW), and has picked up Jesus’ name/identity.

Think about this in terms of a wedding. The Bride (The Church, body of believers, not a building) has her last name changed after marriage to the Husband’s last name (His Identity). The bible says that we are the Bride of Christ, and we enter a covenant relationship (marriage) with Jesus, Our identity becomes that of Jesus because we are married to Him.

This fires me up that Tebow is doing this because, as much as I may have disliked Tebow when he was at Florida, (STRICTLY COMPETITIVE REASONS. I go to Alabama) This guy understands that this is not some “religion/religious thing that we do once a week,” It is WHO HE IS! Keep being a leader Tim and continue being bold for Christ! Don’t let pharisees and the religious crowd discourage you and stop you from being ALL that God has called you to be!

Much Love!

-Ben

I suppose you never “Google” anything? That’s not in there either (but it’s in many modern editions).

It is true, Jesus’ name makes people uncomfortable. In this generation, statistics are at their all time worst. Why? Because society has control of The Church (The body of believers.) And we have been convinced that, “ I might offend someone, therefore I can’t talk about Jesus outside of church.”
Jesus told us to make disciples of ALL nations in the great commission and to share the good news. The reason people get offended is because many people who are sharing the good news don’t have a relationship with Jesus and don’t know The Word.
We are NOT called to save the world. We cant do it. The ONLY way is Jesus. ALL that we are called to do is “deliver the message” and live it. The Holy Spirit does the rest.
What often happens is some guy who, like I said, does not really know Jesus (just knows about him) tries to convert someone (ig: scaring them into saying a prayer, buying a bible, going to church by telling them they are gonna burn in hell)
2 Timothy 2:24-25 tells us not to be quarrelsome, but to gently lead those who oppose Him to The Truth.

Because many churches have moved away from teaching truth and have become dogmatic with God’s Word, “Jesus” has become a name that offends people. We shouldn’t let that stop us from sharing His truth! I know I went WAY off topic but I get so excited about Jesus haha.

Be Blessed!

Ben

Perfectly put! Society has told us that we must stay inside certain “Lines” and if we cross them, we will offend everyone.

Same society is ok with binge drinking, Friends-With -Benefits, homosexuality, Lady Gaga, and Jersey Shore, yet Standing and being bold for God is wrong.

The church needs to wake up

Not AT all. A jersey doesnt save. Only Christ can save. Commercialism has made it sound like, “buy this, spend eternity in Heaven”
Basically, when God changes us and delivers us from whatever it is we were trapped in, We WANT to let people know that we love Jesus, therefore we put a shirt on so that people see it. The shirt or whatever it is, is just another way to publicly show who you belong to.

Remember who it was that crucified Jesus. It was the uptight religious crowd that thought everything had to be done a certain way or else it was sin.
