When Herman Cain held the long-awaited news conference late Tuesday afternoon to tackle allegations that he sexually harassed four women, a smooth-talking Southern attorney was the first person to step to the microphone.
Cains lawyer is L. Lin Wood, a well-known Atlanta-based trial attorney who has carved out a successful career representing the high-profile and falsely accused, often seeking eye-popping damages for those he believes have been libeled or slandered in the press.
Former CBS news anchor Dan Rather once called Wood the attorney for the damned.
When asked why he had chosen to represent Cain, Wood cited the media circus.
I have spent many years representing clients who have seen their reputations and lives destroyed by false accusations in the media, Wood wrote in an e-mail message to The Post Tuesday evening. I believe that Herman Cain has been unfairly put on trial in the court of public opinion based on reports from unknown or anonymous sources, rumor, speculation and inherently improbable statements by the most recent accuser.
With Woods hiring, Cain has a powerful ally on his side. A partner with Wood Hernacki & Evans LLC, Wood has a three-decade-long career prosecuting, and defending, celebrity clients, sometimes winning mega-settlements on their behalf. He is a fierce advocate....

I’m switching to Newt. Cain is innocent but he looks like a buffoon trying to defend himself from the “honey trap.” Newt is now the sharpest knife in the drawer. If its between Romney and Newt, I’m going with Newt.
What’s your basis for that assumption? I do not think Cain could have handled the controversy any better than any one else could have today. He demonstrated composure in the face of a personal crisis. That’s the one of qualities we expect a President to have.
I grant he’s not slick. But you’ve been accustomed to professional politicians who know what you want to hear and whom decades of experience has taught them which button to press produces the best results.
“I believe the mug shot may be from one of his DUIs.”
You “believe”? Pardon me, but your belief isn’t sufficient evidence-especially when stating that someone was arrested for DUI, or any other violation- for that matter.
Furthermore, Mr. L. Lin Wood isn’t on trail or running for public office. He is representing a client.
Grant it, you were responding to a Freeper post, but I am suspicious of your motives. You must pardon me if I have wrongly assumed.
With Lin Wood in the picture, people should be careful what they post on forums, too. Lin will go after everyone and everything.
Civil infraction, I think.
You have every right to change your mind but cutting a man when he’s not down yet... oh ye of little faith! Why don’t we see how it plays out before we jump to conclusions. I say steady as she goes. I certainly would never want you as my Number One. I’d want someone who can make sure I do the right thing, even if its against my instincts.
Is it possible to sue someone’s lawyer, like Gloria Allred? She seems to have gone on TV and made slanderous statements against Cain. A mega-lawsuit against her would be great to see.
His incompetent campaign adviser.
I agree. I don’t think anybody here can suggest a better strategy to handle the situation than what Cain did.
The Dems are prepared to bring out the babe of the week, until election day, just to keep it going. Cain would undoubtedly deny anything to do with it, but his continual denials would simply become less and less vredible, regardless of what the truth was.
Nothing wrong in reporting the facts, reporting with facts is not what the press has done with Cain the past ten days. Now its Cain's turn to throw some punches.
Trust me, Gloria will get the first stone. Wonder if her gold digger wants to stand up now and talk about her genital? Because if she does, her will lose them permanently.
Cain is a public figure. Winning a libel lawsuit is extremely difficult, as I’m sure his attorney told him. Life is too short to play second fiddle to a media consumed by unproven sexual peccadilloes.
He’s leading in the polls and receiving millions of dollars in campaign contributions. If that’s incompetence, give me four of them if I ever run for office...
Anyone STILL questioning Cain’s abortion stance loses credibility with me.
Starting to get on the Cain train.Just might give some money and support. Like a fighter.
I’m afraid that Block will have to go. His “checkered” past, as the Fox article puts it, doesn’t help Cain in his own battle against the bimbo eruptions now coming out.
Cain has to be squeaky clean to prevail and though it appears he is and will likely survive the current onslaught, Blocks past will no doubt be brought as an example of Cain’s poor judgment. If as has been reported on Hannity tonight Block got wrong the family relationship of Cain’s latest accuser to a (former) Politico reporter, such easily refuted assertions do nothing to bolster Cain’s veracity.
Maybe this is what the opposition is wanting; Cain to get bogged down in legal expenses and constantly defending, rather than promoting himself. Cains powerful attorney is, no doubt, quite expensive. They took Sarah out of Alaskan politics with that tactic of bringing forth multiple claims she had to pay lawyers to defend.
I should say that it likely won’t work out for the slime this time IMHO. Cain seems committed to forging ahead. None of this surprised me once he started topping many polls. I believe many quarters are scared to death in the knowledge that Cain could go the distance and easily take out Obozo by a landslide in the General. I seriously doubt anyone fears Mittens in this way. I pray nightly Cain rises above the media hype and keeps the train running on schedule.
More eyes are on him and more people know about him now than there were before this smear campaign broke out. It could work to his advantage if he plays it smart, always appears Presidential, and keeps his mouth in control (few to no mis-speaks). Hopefully this high-priced lawyer and a good PR consultant and a tightly controlled campaign organization keeps the Cain Train on its tracks. It’s a tall order and he needs help. I am doing what I can to support him. He topped his Iowa fund goal of $999,999.99. I hope the more the media rambles on about nothing, the more he $$ draws in. We need a patriot in the White House to restore honor to that office.
Frankly, I don’t see how any Lib is proud of Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, or this current dolt. But they somehow are, and deserve to be roundly defeated by a decent and honorable man.
Cain / Newt 2012 :)
Between Allred and Wood, its not much of a contest. Its good to see he was profiled in the WashCompost story for tomorrow. Consider it a warning shot across the bows of the opposition.
Public figures have rights also. Slander is slander and libel is libel. If slander a public personality, you lose in court.
Dary Matera described Wood’s successes in the Richard Jewell case: “Richard Jewell hired himself some crack libel attorneys, and they’ve been hammering the media ever since. So far, Atlanta lawyers L. Lin Wood and Wayne Grant have torched NBC, CNN, a community college where Jewell once worked, and other media outlets for more than $2 million and counting. And that doesn’t include the undisclosed “six figure” fee they secured for the movie story. The biggest lawsuits - against the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and some other major media outlets - are still pending.”

He may or may not win, but it will give Gloria a head-ache, especially money-wise. Can will have lots of contributors to fund such an effort (and it would not be frivolous, as she has made some outrageous statements).
