The College Board and News Corp. sponsored a forum on education with four GOP presidential candidates last week, and the runaway winner was Newt Gingrich. (Truth in advertising: I moderated the session along with Joel Klein, the former New York schools chancellor who now runs an educational unit for our employer, News Corp. Each candidate received 30 minutes, which was refreshing after the 30-second trivial pursuits of the debates.)
Michele Bachmann (local control), Rick Santorum (moral values) and Herman Cain (business principles) stuck mainly to their talking points, but Mr. Gingrich kept the crowd of 1,000 or so engaged and entertained with a wide-ranging tutorial on everything from the failures of "L.A. Unified" to Jeb Bush's Florida "virtual school." The session was a reminder of Mr. Gingrich's knowledge of government and rhetorical skills, which were overwhelmed by his early campaign missteps.

AND he was a democrat.
Worked out pretty well.
Newt was not my choice - by neither of my choices are running - so
We're left with what we;re left with
And Newt stands head and shoulders above the rest as a ADULT - and with a very precise and detailed agenda...and experience in balancing the budget and creating jobs....
He will sign an EO to prevent the U.S. from having any part of Agenda 21. That's crucial...unless you don't mind the UN taking over our sovereignty. (I wonder how many of the other candidates even know what Agenda 21 is.)
But that's only ONE EO he will enact in his first 2 hours in office - to turn this country around faster than any of the others can. And that's the only way we'll survive as a free nation.
Newt has been rising slowly but steadily in the polls. Whether he can break through remains to be seen. Lots of de facto Obama supporters in this thread.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Cain/Newt-iny next November. :)
Reagan did NOT want that divorce.
Gingrich cheated repeatedly, and dumped wife number two after she got MS.
I will not be voting for anyone who has demonstrated horrible judgment repeatedly.

He going to ‘dismiss’ activist judges - that make/break laws from the bench - He’s going to encourage ALL states to build colleges like the “College of the Ozarks” - and if you don’t know that college, shame on you.

Keep track of his agenda on Newt.org.
Maybe, if your mind isn’t closed like a rusty steel trap, you might want to watch the 90 minute REAL debate between Newt and Cain, Sat nite on C-SPAN. Not media/enemy orchestrated, just a good old Lincoln-Douglas style debate.
8:00-9:30 Eastern - C-SPAN
We cannot afford to lock into our personal beliefs of our superior judgement and not keep an open mind.
I, for one, do not want to live under Socialism - and if that means voting for a ‘thrice married man with a lot of baggage” to prevent, you betcha I will.
An aside: Once all the other candidates have been in the public eye and serving in politics as many years as Newt has, I suspicion they will all have ‘baggage’. You just ain’t gonna get a ‘perfect’ candidate. Get over it.
What you said ;o)
Got that right
You state: Gingrich cheated repeatedly, and dumped wife number two after she got MS.
Gosh. You know more than his daughter, who was there. Amazing.
Jackie Gingrich Cushman wrote a column in May of this year called Setting the Record Straight where she dealt with the myth of Newt Gingrich serving his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital with terminal cancer.
Here is the link:
here are a few excerpts from her column:
- For years, I have thought about trying to correct the untrue accounts of this hospital visit But I have always hesitated, as it was a private family matter and my mother is a very private person.
BTW, I wonder how honorable it is to repeat erroneous information on the web impugning a persons character? You didn’t even get the disease right - or that the tumor was benign.
Unfortunately this false story is widespread and at one time I also believed it until I read what his daughter wrote.
Ah, Nancy Pelosi ain't that heavy is she?
” - - - But in a year when GOP voters are still searching for someone who can go head-to-head with President Obama - - - “
Paul, Paul, Paul, just for once get off the MSM agenda and THINK! Politics is NOT a sporting event! We don’t give a damn about “who is number one?” We are NOT ‘searching’ for a candidate! We are all from Missouri, and a candidate had damn well better have an excellent idea about how to lead us out of THE VALLEY OF DEBT!
We don’t give a damn about a incompetent, spendaholic, alien named Obama, we care about the IDEAS that a candidate has that will clean up the mess that Obama made!
Put away YOUR Editorials in YOUR Wall Street Journal and THINK! The Politician-caused National Debt has put America into a financial death spiral, and NO Candidate has a clue how to solve the main problem which is: CUT BASELINE SPENDING IN YEAR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - - - - n.
Which candidate has outlined even a rough IDEA of how he/she would cut baseline US Federal Annual Spending? (The OLD term was “Budget” but the US hasn’t had one in three years). The answer is NONE!
Not one sorry candidate has ‘splained how he/she plans to cut the baseline spending of the US Federal Government.
Here is a clue to give to your pal Newt. LBJ required that each member of his cabinet “have on his desk” their separate plans as to how THEY would cut THEIR spending by 15 % per year.
Have Newt’s book writing staff dig that document up, dust it off, and use it as the model for “Gingrich to Break Through.”
Suggested first year baseline cut: 1.) A 5 % pay cut for all US Federal employees, contractors, and an additional 5% cut for elected politicians, and their staffs, appointees, and their staffs.
2.) A 5 % baseline cut to ALL “entitlement” payments to individuals, hospitals, doctors, States, and other categories of entities that receive money from the US Government for Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and the illegal Obama”care.”
3.) Eliminate “discretionary” spending.
4.) Reduce US Federal employment to fiscal year 2007 levels.
Year number two (2014) suggestion: Continue the above 4 steps.
Year number 3, 4: Continue to cut baseline spending as above.
For starters, have Newt preach the gospel according to Paul Harvey: “ WHEN YOUR OUTGO EXCEEDS YOUR INCOME, YOUR UPKEEP WILL BE YOUR DOWNFALL.”
At least I got the wives straight. I said wife NUMBER TWO!!!
I bet Newt knows that China has nukes and what “Right of Return” means.
Ouch, that is gonna leave a mark.
I detect a Perrywinkle or Romney(care)bot here.
You mean I must put my principles on hold, hold my nose and vote for one of these guys. Sorry. It’s not about high horses. It’s about saving the country.
Voting for either of these people is tentamount to voting for a demrat. How that defeats Marxism is a mystery to me. If wearing the Pubbie label is your primary criteria for a president I have nothing else to say to you.
If you’re talking Cain, Santorum or Bachmann you have my attention.
Are you telling me that Clinton’s “private” life did not affect his performance as president and/or his presidency?
Obviously Reagan learned from his first mistake and chose wisely the second time. Comparing Reagan to Gingrich makes about as much sense as comparing apples to oranges.
So it’s perfectly ok by you that a person could be a rapist, thief or murderer and still be president. In debate your argument would be called—at best—specious.
Palin was actually my strong 1st choice, but alas... I have been on the Cain train since Sarah’s announcement. I have absolutely no love for Romney and will not vote for him if GOP ends up nominating him. I was interested in Perry - like many of us - when he first entered until he actually opened his mouth and we all saw that there wasn’t all that much there (that, and being lambasted as “heartless” was kind of a turn-off). I certainly do not carry the GOP’s water; I vote and support Conservative/Tea Party. I’m looking at this field - which is not as strong as I would hope it would have been - and trying to assess which candidate would best be able to reverse the rapidly downhill, careening course this country is on (thanks to both Dem and GOP predecessors). I don’t believe Bachmann is the right person, simply because of experience/exposure. I like Santorum, but in a time in which our very survival is at stake due primarily to the economy, a Santorum-Obama campaign would quickly deteriorate into a referendum on abortion/gay marriage/etc. Not that these issues are not important - but, we win if the question is the economy and America’s standing in the world; I’m not so confident if the campaign morphs into primarily a social issues contest. Cain, whom I like and have financially supported, is beginning to show a pattern of poor preparation and not thinking before spouting from the mouth. This, I’m afraid, will hurt him more than any past wayward glances at comely lasses. Perhaps he can turn around this growing perception, but it will require a greater demonstration of campaign organization, planning, execution and discipline.
I too am totally about saving the country. Because Gingrich had peccadilloes in the past does not prima face disqualify him from assuming this role. I would challenge you to point out how Gingrich’s policies are “tentamount {sic} to voting for a demrat”. His policies - well thought out and actually quite bold - will all be anathemas to the Left. But, I don’t know everything, so I would be most happy if you can educate me as to how Newt is actually a Manchurian candidate for the Left/Dems/Progressives.
OK - granted the Pelosi sofa picture is damning, but let’s look at the bigger field picture. Perry was Gore’s campaign manager in TX. Cain voted for Billy Jeff Clinton. Santorum’s support of Arlen Benedict Specter torpedoed Pat Toomey’s primary challenge in 2006 - the result of this, by the way, was reelecting Benedict Arlen who promptly switched teams and cast the deciding Senate vote for Obamacare. Romney has, as we all know, trumpeted that, at times, he was more liberal than Teddy Kennedy. Bachmann was a Democrat supporter in her early years. Whenever anyone brings up Gingrich on FR, the Pelosi picture is placed front and center. We should be intellectually consistent and add in the past political strayings of the other candidates when we talk about them, right?
-——granted the Pelosi sofa picture is damning——
The sofa picture is not Damning. To damn the photo is to admit ignorance to the real world. To say Gotcha is to lie about the reality of relationships in the Congress and Washington.
The point of our system is adversarial congeniality. .
I was referring to marital relationships (divorces, etc) and I did qualify my statement noting that “outrageous behavior” (getting Lewinskys in the Oval Office) are non- starters (” To the best of my knowledge, theres no empirical evidence that how one conducts their most private relationships has any bearing on their professional performance (save, of course, truly outrageous behavior like Berlusconi in Italy)”. Stating the obvious, there’s a big difference between legal relationship choices (divorce, even adultery) and criminal behavior. And, re Reagan/Gingrich, the point I was making was that both men have been married more than once and it seems that they found happiness and solid relations with someone other than their first wives.
It’s easy to be wildly hyperbolic, but it really doesn’t advance a rational argument...
