Cain: In my opinion, I did nothing inappropriate
hotair ^ | Tuesday October 31, 2011 | Allahpundit

Not the only maybe-interesting-maybe-not hedge from tonight’s PBS interview. Business Insider highlights this exchange as evidence that the scandal’s still alive:

JUDY WOODRUFF: And there was some mention of a hotel room at a convention or at a meeting. Did any one of these women, were they ever asked to meet you, or….

HERMAN CAIN: That I absolutely do not recall. You know, I have no recollection of that.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Was there any behavior on your part that you think might have been inappropriate?

HERMAN CAIN: In my opinion, no. But as you would imagine, it’s in the eye of the person who thinks that maybe I crossed the line.

One of the difficulties of this story is trying to gauge whether an unpolished, inexperienced non-pol like Cain is capable of slick deceitful parsing or whether, as usual, he’s simply winging it and stumbling into inartful phrasing that raises doubts inadvertently. Remember, this is a guy who’s had to explain his position on abortion five or six times over the last few weeks because he couldn’t get through an unmuddled answer. Maybe he really doesn’t recall what happened back then and doesn’t want to get caught in a “lie” if it turns out he had a business meeting with one of the accusers in his hotel room. Maybe he’s being precise about his “opinion” because his lawyers warned him that there’s some sort of nondisparagement clause in the settlements that discourages him from asserting that his accusers are liars. Or maybe he’s much craftier than we all think and really is engaged in a bit of Clintonian hedging here. It’s hard enough determining the truth when we have so few facts, but when the candidate himself is a question mark, it’s impossible.

Exit quotation from RCP political analyst Sean Trende: “The Cain story is almost certainly from an R campaign. The fact it is being dropped in Oct. suggests there is worse to come.”

If it was a democrat they would (should) have dropped this one in Sept of next year.

Unfortunately, in this interview it sounds like Cain is starting to hedge his answers. How hard is it for somebody to say "I never invited any woman to my hotel room......other than my wife, who usually turns me down."

Clinton was creditably accused of violent rape. Actually, accused of being a serial rapist.

The media yawned.

Clinton paid Paula Jones $850,000 to shut up and go away.

The media yawned.

Barack Obama was creditably accused of smoking crack and having sex with Larry Sinclair.

The media yawned.

Herman Cain was accused of making a comment that offended some easily offended women.

STOP THE PRESSES!!! The media has got its story!!

Counting the days until Stephen Bannon reveals his bomb... 30 days out from the Iowa Caucus. Can’t wait because it will likely take down Obama, democrats- or scum sucking crony republicans.

Gee whiz, I wonder where Judy was with the Clinton/Broderick hotel room affair investigation-you know, Broderick’s fat lip and Clinton saying, “you better put some ice on that.” No need to answer, why I’ll bet she was just one of the MSM types trying to cover the incident up and make sure it died.

To what do you refer? I know of Bannon only as director of "Undefeated". What does he have that would be of such consequence to 0bama?

BTW...good to cross paths with you again.

Not to mention the Paula Jones being invited to Willie’s hotel room incident, when she turned Willy down and lost her Arkansas State job, as I recall.

I agree. I wish he would’ve said I never invited a women to the room or if he did for some other reason such as to discuss some topic in greater detail etc. He should’ve just said so. However we need to keep this in context. There are restrictions on nondisclosure aggreements. The last thing Cain wants is to give these women a legal reason to start making the talk show circuit. This still is a case of old allegations that were not found to have merit. He make have had a few too many drinks and would be embarassed to say that he jokingly said something stupid that was misunderstood. So then a new line to the story emerges etc.
Cain should’ve simple stuck to his denials of ever sexually harassing anyone and provided no further elaboration. That is what I would’ve advised.

I watched his explaination and I don’t think there was much ambiguity but I get the feeling we have another day of this crap to go through. The sentiment I see generally though is not anti-Cain outside the regular Rombots who are trying to play this as the Cain campaign is dead. I wouldnt be surprised if this helps Cain in the end. Any reasonable person sees this as an unfair and baseless attack. As long as it stays in that context he will be fine.

The film then goes on two tangents—positing Palin as a populist leader/outsider à la Ronald Reagan, and crowning her as the de facto founding mother of the revolutionary Tea Party movement in America—also chronicled by Bannon in the documentaries Generation Zero and Fire From the Heartland, the latter of which devoted a great deal of time to the rise of Michele Bachmann. When asked about the 2012 presidential election, Bannon said he believes that Bachmann and Palin can coexist as “two totally different candidates”—before hinting that he himself has something special in store: “I’ve got something that I’m working on that I think is going to be even more controversial than this film,” he said. “If everything goes according to plan, I intend to drop this exactly 30 days before the Iowa caucus. It’s definitely timed for 2012.” He pauses, before adding, “There are forces brewing right beneath the surface, that I try to show in these films, that are going to have a tectonic plate shift in the culture of American politics. I think the paradigm is shifting, and it’s going to shift dramatically.”

That would not surprise me AT ALL. In fact, I would be McCain is heavy on the take and had so many backroom deals/offers, it will make everyone sick- more so than usual.

I think there is more to come. That, and Cain’s inability to communicate effectively/tell the truth will hurt him. He can’t remember things which to me seem nearly impossible to forget, if they are important barometers of morality to a man. Who the heck can’t remember if he invited a woman to his hotel room? Either someone completely innocent and naive and forgetful, or a liar or? He needs to QUICKLY decide how to discuss this to get his message across and back on topic. If this drags on too long, he is toast.

We need to get to the ‘high tech’ part of this lynching and figure out where and who released this garbage on Cain. Time for the equal and opposite reaction side of the pendulum to swing back from whence it came.

Its been so long since these hypocrites have been able to feign outrage about anything. It must be like a breath of fresh air to them. Not since Clarence Thomas.

Pray for America
