If you have ever wondered about the government’s ability to control the civilian airwaves, you will have your answer on November 9th.

On that day, federal authorities are going to shut off all television and radio communications simultaneously at 2:00PM EST to complete the first ever test of the national Emergency Alert System (EAS).

If it is right smack at the top of the hour, it will not interfere at all; that is usually when the stations do the news.

Aw, I was just funnin’ ya because you said 7.2kHz.

That's easily within the Amateur Radio 40 Meter band, and I spend many a night there talking around the world.

Can't wait to see Sock Monkey's government try taking control of my station. (Bring it, bitches!)

I guess this is why they went 100% digital for TV, it is easier to hijack. I know with broadcast, as long as your signal is more powerful you can override any station.

The signal-to-noise ratio on this thread is degrading significantly.

"They" went 100% digital because vestigial-sideband AM is a noisy and wasteful method of sending video over radio waves. There's no conspiracy; you can send 3 digital channels (depending on picture resolution) in the same bandwidth where only 1 analog channel would fit.

I know with broadcast, as long as your signal is more powerful you can override any station.

What movie did you learn that from? If anything, the "capture effect" (as it is known in FM broadcast) works BETTER on digital TV than it did on analog, because two analog channels (or noise sources) would superimpose on the video image. Ever seen interference from a nearby CB transmitter on analog TV? On digital, if the checksum for a received picture element doesn't match, the TV throws it away, so two signals won't superimpose.

Please. If you don't know the technical details, ask, or don't post.

No, it's not. 7.2 MHz falls in the 40 meter band, not 7.2 kHz.

Well just damn' my dyslexia, you're right.

I have to check the display on my TS-2000 now, I'd swear it says "kHz." Been staring at that too long I guess.

Thanks, appreciate the correction.

Didn't the government also want TV stations to move to digital so they could auction off the bandspace for wi-fi which is believed to be a better application?

I’m not usin’ a TS-2000, and post 42 did say kHz, not mHz.

But I am relyin’ on my eyes, and they tell me that when I see Obama speech transcripts that I am looking at deep pullis femis, so can I trust ‘em?

I can remember having those glossy paper textbook covers handed out to us in school that were printed in yellow, black and white, and they explained all about what you should do in the event of an attack, what the fallout shelter signs looked like (and where you could expect to find a shelter)and how thick a concrete and earth barrier would have to be to repel radiation waves. It even explained the differences in tone between a firehouse siren and a civil-defense siren.Scary but informative,in its day.

What about old analog TVs without any attached digital gizmos. Could they ever be used as an alternate communication system?

I didn't deny it did say kHz, in fact I thanked the poster for correcting me. (BTW: Yes, I do have mild dyslexia, which makes for some "interesting" reading here on FR sometimes, especially when I'm tired as I am now having been up most of the night.)

But I am relyin’ on my eyes, and they tell me that when I see Obama speech transcripts that I am looking at deep pullis femis, so can I trust ‘em?

**SNORT!** I can't even begin to tell you what my eyes read 5x...

I don't see how, but perhaps you may want to ask backwoods-engineer if he can think of anything.

Funny thing is, I still have one of the last Zenith glass-picture tube TV's to roll off the line in Melrose Park, IL (not terribly far from where I live) and about all it gets used for anymore is a tertiary game console display when my sons and nephew's are going to war playing Battlefield Bad Company II ....

Proof that there’s nothing worth watching on television anymore.

Aside from a source of parts to build radio receivers/transceivers and/or a pirate analogue TV station, I don't know what use old TV's would be good for. I have a 1982 Zenith I use everyday that we bought new, she is 29 years old, shows her age a little but still works.

True but be careful what you ask for. Please read my post at 184. 73s

We might have to employ radio and other tactics that the Viet Cong and NVA did in Vietnam if it came down to it, but many times, there are low-tech ways to defeat the ultra high-tech "The Man" has.

Not exactly news ...

Fifty+ years ago, your standard AM dial had those funny triangle markers at 640 khz (kc back then) and 1240 khz. The idea was, if the Rooskies attacked, normal broadcasting would cease, and civil defense information would be broadcast on those two frequencies. They didn't want the Rooskie bombers tuning their direction finders to 1500 and unloading Tsar Bomba when they got to Washington.

That is fascinating. There are still some towns in rural TN that have the fallout shelter signs on the buildings.
