I can remember having those glossy paper textbook covers handed out to us in school that were printed in yellow,black and white,and they explained all about what you should do in the event of an attack,what the fallout shelter signs looked like (and where you could expect to find a shelter)and how thick a concrete and earth barrier would have to be to repel radiation waves.It even explained the differences in tone between a firehouse siren and a civil-defense siren.Scary but informative,in its day.

Also, if being bombarded in school with this stuff wasn’t enough, I couldn’t escape it on Saturday mornings while watching the cartoons. The commercials would show people shopping on Main Street, USA when the sirens would go off and how they would have to duck into doorways or brick buildings. It traumatized me.
