Ohio Gov. John Kasich is crisscrossing his state in hopes of winning the public over to collective-bargaining reforms he says are absolutely necessary to give state and local officials the flexibility to deal with budget problems.
“It’s just important for us to win, period,” the first term Republican told National Review Online in a story published Tuesday.
The collective-bargaining bill, known as state Senate bill 5, passed the Republican-controlled legislature last March and was signed into law by Kasich.
But labor activists and Democratic lawmakers organized a massive petition drive with more than 230,000 signatures to get the bill on the ballot. On Nov. 8, Ohio voters will decide its fate.
National Review’s Robert Costa reported the bill spearheaded by Kasich would force state employees to increase their share of pension and healthcare contributions.
It also would outlaw public sector strikes, ban binding arbitration. and give local officials and school boards bargaining flexibility. Automatic teacher pay raises would be replaced by a merit system.
The Ohio bill is similar to the one pushed through in Wisconsin earlier this year by Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
But one particular difference — the fact that Walker excluded police and firefighters from his reform measure and Kasich did not — is giving the Ohio governor some extra headaches.
Kasich’s approval ratings have suffered mightily and he is now being cast “as an enemy of public safety,” Costa wrote.
But Kasich is pressing on, undeterred about what a loss on the ballot initiative could mean to his political future.

Kasich is making a terrible mistake. With a majority in the House and Senate, he should repeal SB5 and re-write it.
This version will be defeated due to a few things extraneous to his intent. (1) As this article says, he included police and firemen and he shouldn’t have, and (2) teachers are most upset about the law having “supervisors” evaluate their teaching.
The common joke here is that the supervisors will grant “horizontal promotions.” And it’s true. We have one in our area who is on his FOURTH teacher wife.
The other problem is that Ohio has too many phys ed and elementary teachers who choose to go into administration.
I know one math teacher whose principal asked her to show him how to figure out how many square feet are in the gymnasium.
They have people who avoided tough subjects evaluating those who they don’t have a clue about.

Any state where the public-sector unions dominate will end up like NJ: an employment desert, with Americans and the companies they work for fleeing and turning over whole counties to illegal aliens and the unassimilated permanent underclass (not an ideal tax base). Without “sanctuaries”, the schools, courts and jails would lose a lot of business; the illegal aliens are here to keep our strip-malls humming and public employees “working”. The federal government (that is, the federal taxpayers) subsidizes this wealth re-distribution. Dems are racing to make it so no matter what state you live in, you’ll bear your share of this; if they can’t bleed you on the state or municipal level, they’ll get it on the federal level. Whole states would “close” without this intervention.
It passed, didn’t it? May it pass again!
Nothing is off the table in this economy.
The choice is clear: Include all public employees in the plan or face serious budget and/or personnel cuts. Ohio is one of the states getting hit particularly hard with long term unemployment. The tax base simply isn't there. Those still holding jobs and paying taxes won't be willing to go higher.
Ohio, like the Nation, is so infested with Union slugs in public jobs that are over-compensated, under-performing, over-benefitted, that they are outnumbering private sector employees that are non-Union in the State, here.
I fear that Ohio, which is KNOWN for election fraud, will be over-powered by Unionists and Democrat inner-city multi-votes and illegally-cast Mail-in Votes, that Issue 2 (which is to retain SB-5) may go down to defeat, giving bargaining power back to the Unions.
Just like Wisconsin, Unions are pouring MILLIONS into campaign ads and State-Run-Media hype about fewer saftety forces, fewer teachers, fewer nurses, etc., etc.
If this Union-extortionism continues, we are gonna see out-and-out Civil War II after 2012.
My sense is that behind the scenes, if the Republicans have any common sense, they should have a Bill ready for just the case of Issue 2 being defeated, and present the Legislation the following day.
Second, remove Police and Fire from the New Bill, and keep all else the same.
The ONLY way to combat the government Unions is to confront the issue HEAD-ON.
What Ohio needs ultimately to do is to make itself a Right-To-Work State, before any more public employee Union growth occurs (and it will).
The radio commercials here in Cincinnati are terrible and lies...they say w/voting Yes on it (which means SB5 is intact) will make criminals be able to walk because police officers will lose their jobs. This is a lie, however, I’ve not heard good commercials for voting Yes (it is Issue 2 and needs to be voted, “Yes”). I’m not real happy about the campaign to keep it intact.
I think things have deteriorated to the point that only a constitutional amendment banning unionization of government employees will prevent this kind of mischief.
1)Repeal of Davis-Bacon, which allows prevailing wages on Government Contracts to be required, which is the Union Scale, and prices non-Union Contractors out of the bidding.
2)ALL Public Sector employees are prohibited from Union Membership, via a Constitutional Amendment, AND, Membership be made NATIONALLY into "Right-To-Work", i.e., free choice on joining a Union, and no compulsory Union Shop rules can be applied. If an employee chooses NOT to join a Union, EVEN THOUGH 50%+1 want a Union, they DO NOT HAVE TO JOIN OR PAY DUES.
Those two items may be difficult now because of the "gimme" mentality that permeates the have-not's of this country AND the number of Union Public Sector employees now in existence. Right now, the Country is nearly evenly divided by the REAL Americans who want ONLY the Constitutionally-provided powers in Government, and those who support handouts and free-riding at Taxpayer expense. More than half the population pays no taxes now, and don't want that to change at all.
As Dear Old Dad always said, “Once the parasites outnumber the hosts, it’s all over.”

I am not saying that Herman Cain compares with the Lord. But I am saying that what is being done to him today is very similar to what mob mentality did to Jesus.

Evaluated by supervisors? Who often don’t have a good understanding of the work you do?
Sounds like it’s time to welcome the teachers to the real world.
(And as to the ‘horizontal promotions’, perhaps you should hop onto one of the Cain threads and talk some sense into the Cainiacs that the women who filed sexual harassment complaints against Cain 12 years ago aren’t necessarily the scum of the earth.)
