WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate threw its support behind the potato Tuesday, voting to block an Obama administration proposal to limit the vegetable on school lunch lines.
Agriculture Department rules proposed earlier this year aimed to reduce the amount of french fries in schools, limiting lunchrooms to two servings a week of potatoes and other starchy vegetables. That angered the potato industry and members of Congress from potato-growing states, who say USDA should focus on the preparation instead and that potatoes can be a good source of fiber and potassium.
Following a bipartisan agreement on the issue, the Senate by voice vote accepted an amendment by Republican Sen. Susan Collins that would block USDA from putting any limits on serving potatoes or other vegetables in school lunches.

French fries and Tomato ketchup.
Who says American kids don’t eat vegetables?
"What's 'ttaers', precious? Ssss, ssss?
Give us fish NOW, and keep Nassssty chips!"
I grew up on tater tots;)
As did I. I still get them at Sonic Drive-Ins.
Enough German fascism. Unelected fascist bureaucrats have no power to write laws under our constitution. If congress can’t realize that simple fact, then it will be up to the people to make that fact apparent through the states. And that will get very messy for congress. We can start with treason trials in the states for the EPA and ATF.
God save us from the Fascist State. sheesh.
How politics affects American business. If it feels good do it, F the little people. (producers)
You assumed the Senate was taking up its own policy and doing something silly (easy to believe, I know)...however, in this case, they were in fact moving to overturn a move that had already been made by the USDA and limit its authority:
From the article:

So is this another Obama spudnik moment?
Heh heh ... Tuber or not tuber...that is the question...
As long as local communities accept federal government money things like this will go on.
Quit taking that mob money and you can tell the feds to go...
Moochelle doesn't, though ...
I do remember during Reagan’s years they considered Ketchup as vegetables . The lefties has a cow.
We are in this mess because Reagan could not keep his promise to undo the Department of Education, and he had both houses for a short time.
He did however repeal the double nickel speed limit.
There are powerful Republican Progressives in place to keep the rabble in their place. Once you figure that out it gets easier to swallow.
Mark Levin wouldn’t agree, but he misses some too. Like, Christianity had nothing to do with our Constitution, or at least that is how he dressed down one of his callers. Love him but he is dead wrong on that issue, and he is wrong to think there is a great difference in the Parties. They may come in different but they tend to leave looking very much alike.
Potatoes or lack there of brought a lot of Irish to this country, and me mothers name was Riley. We however had plenty of them when I was growing up, we had the fried and boiled and mashed, but we had them every day because they were about a nickel a pound, as we’re the beans, which we also had every day, for the same reason.
I used to know every eatable weed, and hunted every thing that flew or creeped, ate them all.
On an not-all-that-related note, one of the running jokes we used to have around the dorms at college was “time to eat potatoes”. We had spuds in some form with almost every meal in the dining halls. It’s one of the easiest ways to stretch a food budget.
Me, I loved it. I’m sort of the Bubba of potatoes. French fried potatoes, baked potatoes, scalloped potatoes, potatoes au gratin, mashed potatoes, potato soup, potato soup with leeks and bacon, potato croquettes...
Obama is just trying to hurt Idaho, a Republican state.
Toilets, light bulbs and now potatoes..........The stupidity just keeps on coming.
