WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate threw its support behind the potato Tuesday, voting to block an Obama administration proposal to limit the vegetable on school lunch lines.
Agriculture Department rules proposed earlier this year aimed to reduce the amount of french fries in schools, limiting lunchrooms to two servings a week of potatoes and other starchy vegetables. That angered the potato industry and members of Congress from potato-growing states, who say USDA should focus on the preparation instead and that potatoes can be a good source of fiber and potassium.
Following a bipartisan agreement on the issue, the Senate by voice vote accepted an amendment by Republican Sen. Susan Collins that would block USDA from putting any limits on serving potatoes or other vegetables in school lunches.

Potato vote: The eyes have it!
Why the F is the Federal Gov’t setting lunch room menus? Really? Do we need those people? How many are working this project? GET THEM OUT.
Just letpeople run their own lives.
Proudly serving Baked French Fries (Freedom Fries) with dinner tonight.
There is no answer to the question what is wrong with these democrats?
Susan Collins did something I approve of! Now if she’d just start on the $14 trillion debt. Progress.
didn’t they also ban potatoes for WIC recipients or something?
Weird, the Obama admin has a thing against potatoes...
My God is this what our country has come to? The U.S. Senate voting on potatoes!!!
The federals should have nothing to do with schools, period
Half of the Senators ARE potatoes.
Looking more like USSR headlines every day.
LOL!
So is this another Obama “spudnik” moment?
“Proudly serving Baked French Fries (Freedom Fries) with dinner tonight.”
I tend toward the semi-veg healthy variety...melted cheese with bacon strips. Or a little cream gravy. Won’t mix the two...too unhealthy. The cream gravy is good with chicken fried steak, too. Ummm Ummmmmmmm...that’s good eatin.
I mean, really, when a portion of the Federal Gov’t brings forth such stupidity, zero out their budget and move on. As time goes on, it will become self-correcting.
they block his spud bill and they blocked his dud (”jobs”) bill.
Senate Dems 2
Obama - ZERO
that’s confidence
Dittoes. The whole country seems to be circling the drain while our fearless leaders debate the merits of potatoes.
Since my family can (often does) eat potatoes for three meals a day, how can they even make a lunch without taters? It’s mindboggling. And, no place for the government to meddle.
