President Obama has deployed combat troops to central Africa to aid in the fight against the Lord's Resistance Army. In a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner, Obama says 12 troops with "appropriate combat equipment" were deployed on October 12 and approximately 100 in total will be deployed including a second combat team and headquarters, communications and logistics personnel. The forces will provide information and advise and assist "select partner nation forces," Obama explains. The troops will not fight except in self-defense. The full letter is after the jump.

Medea Benjamin is hanging out with the Occupy Wall Street folks. When she's not at her two-million dollar house, of course.
He sure likes military action for being a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
I have been to some of the crappiest places on the planet and even after that this is one place I would NEVER want go to. I have been right next door and that is close enough. It is perhaps at once the most lawless, illogical, emotionally charged, mindless, gruesome, dangerous places on the planet. It is better left strictly alone by anyone not willing to be come as absolutely ruthless as you can possibly imagine.
This is a place we should stay completely away from, hands down it is a no win proposition.
I am curious as to why he bothered sending a letter to Speaker Boehner.
Do what's Boner saying about this? What's McConnell saying? Then what are they doing about it. The scum of D.C. stinks ever so bad. Every (R) should have a primary opponent.
You are correct. The President maybe setting up another Somlia rescue type effort that could end up with another “Blackhawk Down” scenario.
That explains why Obama is sending our troops there.
Christians who rape and murder or rape and enslave children lead by a man claiming to be a prophet of God charged with establishing peace on earth?
Doesn’t sound like any group of Christians with which I am familiar.
Uh Folks, the Lord’s Resistance Army are not Christians. Look it up. Joseph Kony is its leader. The day someone takes him out is the day there will be cause for celebration in all of central Africa. Don’t disseminate wrong information.
WHAT?????????????????????????????????????????????
Isn’t that how U.S involvement in Vietnam started?
If he is really sending in only 12 guys, there won't be any body to come to their rescue, should they need it.
I've never heard of a group of Christians raping, torturing, murdering, and enslaving children as means to establish peace on earth. The LRA doesn't sound like a group of Christians to me.
Plus I think places in that area has some unknown disease that is still lurking..
Those are just details. /s
There was actually some part of the budget bill passed in the 2009-2010 session that provided money for humanitarian relief for this area. I’m not sure how the money has been spent to date or how much of it has been spent, but I assume this letter was sent to Boehner (pronounced Bay-ner, digger) because the funds were in that bill, although there was no indication that the money was to be used for military intervention.
And if he has 100 combat troops (plus their logistical support), he’s not planning on having them simply hand out relief supplies. Obama regards the US military as his personal hit squad, and I’m sure the Muslims have appealed for help in this case and he’s coming through with it.
That’s not to support the LRA, incidentally; it is a vicious, violent cult run by a psychopathic “prophet” and while its “resistance” is mostly against Muslims, it also attacks Christians, although its “prophet” originally saw himself fighting against the Muslims. But I don’t think our military intervention is warranted.
Got it. I’m only repeating what Rush just said. Looks like he didn’t do his homework either.
And this is a National Security interest because?...........
Tyrant.
