French president Nicolas Sarkozy squarely blames Israel for stalled talks and says the Jewish state's national identity is "silly."
According to the oft-controversial French magazine Le Canard Enchaîne, President Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the idea of a Jewish state is "silly."
"It is silly to talk about a Jewish state," Sarkozy said in reference to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's assertion no true peace could be made until officials in Ramallah accepted Israel's essential Jewish identity.
"It would be like saying that this table is Catholic," he added. "There are two million Arabs in Israel."
Sarkozy also placed sole blame for failed negotiations between Israel and PA officials on Netanyahu's shoulders.

Some people think that Sarkozy is a silly idea.
going solely by the context in this thread, he’s right, actually. a state is a political, legal entity. it’s is inanimate.
Google “French War Victories” and find out who the “Silly” really are.
So, Sarkozy thinks Iran is not a Muslim state? Oh really...
I am really starting to not like Sarkozy.
Don’t mess with Israel.
The french always resented that the brits robbed them from taking Palestine from the Ottomans whom they had both made war with in order to have territory to bribe Italians and Greeks into making war with the Austro Hungarians, by thinking to “give” it to the jews, yet they held fast, defied the brits and took Lebanon (with Syria), because it was “Christian”.
And isn’t Sarkosy a Hungarian and jewish?
We’re on a carousel

Vatican City is a state composed entirely of one religion, and it is legitimate..what makes the idea of a Jewish state any different?
Ed
This anti-Israel garbaaaaaage from La France began with Charles de Gaulle after the Six Day War in 1967. The IDF air force won their victories with French built Mirage and Mystere jet fighters but in 1968 de Gaulle cancelled existing military contracts and spare parts replacement. Soon afterward Paris was in flames (pre-Muslim) and de Gaulle himself was gone after that.
If Sarkozy is trying to placate the muzzies then he’s even stupider than we thought. Not even the insufferably arrogant “le grand Charles” would have dared question the legitimacy of the Jewish state. Disgraceful!
Not sure. But that's not my point. Everyone within the borders of the "city-state" might be Catholic, and the constitution of the entity might incorporate and endorse Catholicism. But what Sarkozy appears to be saying -- again, in the context of what appeared in the thread -- is that an inanimate entity is irreligious. True enough. Is his remark irrelevant, inflammatory, or sophistry? Perhaps, but I didn't read the entire interview.
What thread?
“Vatican City is a state composed entirely of one religion, and it is legitimate..what makes the idea of a Jewish state any different?”
Saudi Arabia is an Islamic state, and Jews are not even allowed to go there, nobody of another religion is allowed to practice it there, and one city there is totally off limits to non-muslims. And the Shia minority is held down with brute force.
Compare that to the state of religious freedom in Israel.. (where are there even Arab muslim members of the parliament).
Ow...my head hurts...but don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting you, but that sentence is harder to follow than calculus.
The frogs are looking at the odds.
They figure the Arabs can beat Israel this time and they dont want to side with a loser.
European Catholics carry antisemitic DNA.
Too bad it isn’t from a video. It would go viral.
Yes, but as history as taught us time after time, short-term pacification of a bully does not lead to peace.
