Hard to believe Anchorage has managed so far with all the traffic through there. When I lived there it was a major issue for equipment coming in.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A rogue fishing vessel caught in the North Pacific four weeks ago was stranded off the coast of Alaska on Monday while authorities prepared to remove the crew and kill a large number of rats on board, a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said.

Interesting - so according to the above posts, threatened environmental imapct, just the threat of it, grants Hostis humani generis status, the same status afforded to pirates and slavers.
Seems to me an enterprising salvor should enter the vessel, gas it with ricin, and then put a salvage lein on it, bring it to port and then arrest the vessel.
1) The EPA will have to do an environmental impact study.
2) The EPA will determine that before the sinking can be accomplished, ALL contaminants must be removed from the vessel
3) The EPA will request Congress to provide funding for this emergency operation.
4) Congress will be deadlocked over where it must cut spending in order to get the money. At the same time, Obama will announce that he will veto any plan that does not include tax increases on everyone who earns a salary except SEIU members.
5) While beaurocrats and politicians dither,the winter expansion of the "shrinking" polar ice cap will enclose the ship's hull and soon crush it.
6) The US taxpayers will foot the bill to clean up the oil that will drift ashore after the ice melts.
Well.... after that bit of biological information, I am on board for nuking it from space. LOL!

How did they get the crew off without bringing rats with them, if the infestation is as bad as that?
I was going to post that. I recently heard it done on an old radio show from the 40’s or 50’s. It’s a really scary tale.

Isn’t an urban legend (or perhaps biological fact?) that cockroaches would definitely survive the blast. Perhaps a gang of Cairn Terriers or Rat Terriers let loose on that ship would have a positive outcome! My Cairn is packed and ready to go!

I know that Seattle has really big rats from its port activity.
The ship and its cargo are completely forfeit, and by the law of the sea the crew are pirates. Therefore, the best solution is for the whole vessel and its contents to be scuttled, the crew arrested and tried as pirates, using photographic evidence.
No way should this be permitted into a US port.

I don't know that these sorts of rats could survive that climate without us. We provide them food and housing.
I guess the crew could claim to believe the ship is registered. That claim could even be true.
