The power of D

Sunshine vitamin’s potential health benefits stir up, split scientists

By Nathan Seppa
July 16th, 2011; Vol.180 #2 (p. 22)

A nutritional supplement that is free of charge, offers a wide range of health benefits and poses little risk sounds like fodder for a late-night TV commercial. It offers a safe route to better health, these advocates say, by promoting proper function of the bones, heart, brain, immune system, you name it. Yet, the proponents claim, most people don’t get enough. Whereas humans’ prehistoric ancestors lived outdoors and made oodles of vitamin D in their sun-exposed skin, people today have become shut-ins by comparison — and scant sun exposure means low vitamin D.

Of course, not everyone sees such a grand reach for the vitamin. While scientists concur that it is essential for bone maintenance, some stop right there. The skeptics note that vitamin D’s other promising qualities have shown up largely in studies that fall short of the gold standard of medicine — the randomized controlled trial, in which groups of people get either a placebo or the real thing. While a handful of randomized trials have shown additional benefits, others have not, leaving a gap in the vitamin’s otherwise sterling reputation.

This debate came to a head last November, when an Institute of Medicine panel of scientists announced new vitamin D recommendations. The old intake levels were barely high enough to prevent rickets, a bone condition associated with the Industrial Revolution. The IOM panel boosted the recommended daily intake of the vitamin from 200 to 600 international units per day for most of the population. The new dose is about 15 micrograms, in the range of vitamin D found in most multivitamins.

“Before I started taking ‘higher’ doses of vitamin D, I would have bronchitis at least once and sometimes twice a winter requiring a doctors visit...Now, no bronchitis in at least four years. “

I used to have at least 2 sinus infections a year. Usually after/with a cold. I caught nearly every bug going around. After I read about vitamin D3 here (probably your article), I started taking 4000 IU a day (double if anyone around me has a cold/flu), my husband can have a cold and I don’t get it. Haven’t had a sinus infection in at least 3 years.

I’m a believer!

I have been taking 4000 of the vit. D3 for more than a year and after reading about vit. K2 added one pill of that to my regimen. If interest, google Dr. Mercola and subscribe to his newsletter. In the archives you can read all about vit. K and D3.
Another great site is www.earthclinic.com
Best wishes.

I take 2000IUs a day of D3.

Instead of using a Netti pot, I use a Nielmed squeeze bottle. It does the same thing but is easier to use. I call it my Snot Blaster 3000 . . .

A very important note about Vitamin D are two small (?) groups of people on either side of the reaction to oral D3.

1) Some small (?) number get a reaction to as little as 3000 IU of Vitamin D supplements. Details are scant as to why, but it is essential that somebody finds out.

2) Another small (?) number do not properly *absorb* oral Vitamin D, so even if they take huge doses, it does not show up to any great extent in their blood. (This screams out some condition like pernicious anemia from the inability to absorb Vitamin B-12, but there is little or no research in this area.)

(In both of these cases, it is unknown if it is an either/or condition, or if there is a scale of responses, such as some people having a reaction to 3000 IU, others having a reaction to 6000 IU, etc. And the same with absorption, is it either/or, or does it vary in degree and does it change over time?)

It is always important to note that Vitamin D is not a typical vitamin, but more accurately described as a hormone. One that appears to be both essential to our immune system and is typically found in an unhealthily low level in many Americans.

Thanks for the ping on D3.

For those who are fish or soy allergic Twinlab produces dry D3 as well as dry A & D3.

Many people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome lack certain enzymes that allow them to metabolize vitamins and medications normally.

My reading the subject shows possible side effects if you take 10,000 IU’s or more daily. You might want to consult your doctor about such excessive intake. We take 4,000-6000 per day. Have not had a sniffle in a year and no flu shots. D-3 really is an amazing vitamin.

When you first start using it, it is a very weird sensation. You soon get used to it.

Nothing beats a Snot Blaster 3000! LOL!

I’ve been taking about 10,000 units a day, haven’t gotten sick since. My naturpath told me (and another friend confirmed it) that Biotics Bio D. Mulsion Forte is the BEST source/brand you can get.

I get mine either through him or Amazon.

"I also Netti pot. (sp?)"

Grossan Hydro-Pulse MUCH more effective than the "Netti pot". My wife and I will give up our Grossans only "from our cold dead hands".
