Daniels asks conservatives to cut Perry some slack
Times Union ^ | Sept. 25, 2011 | AP

Posted on 09/25/2011 9:02:09 AM PDT by Clairity

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is asking fellow Republicans not to count out Rick Perry.

Daniels says it's too early for what he calls "last rites" over the Perry campaign, and he notes that Perry hasn't been in the race for very long.

Daniels says people ought to cut Perry some slack and give him a little time.

Daniels also says he's worried that the party's nominee will end up playing it safe in light of President Barack Obama's political weakness, and merely campaign as a default option to Obama's re-election.

“Are you saying, you think the black man cannot win because he is black??/”

Did you just get this off the DU talking points, let’s play the race card?

Look at the polls — and not a meaningless straw poll. Cain is a good guy, but he barely registers life in the polls.

“Daniels, isn’t this the same establishment rino who refused to accept the fact O’s a socialist?”
______________________________________________

Yes, that would be the same RINO, loved by the Establishment, always ready to compromise with the Libs, Daniels.

The fact that he gets Daniel’s endorsement is not particularly appealing to me. You would think that with all these conservatives in the GOP, at least one of the 5 or so leading candidates would be a conservative.

And regarding the Florida straw poll — it is straw poll, not a primary.

It a straw poll of GOP activists, not anyone who pays for a ticket like the other straw polls.

Also your spin here is exactly at odds with what Gov Perry himself said yesterday morning.

If not Perry, it's Romney and if it's Romney, it's Obama.

Still sticking to that spin after Herman Cain royally kicked both Romney and Perry's butts last night? Lame.

The answer is neither.

Romney is a liberal and Perry name calls his own party’s base.

Neither is the answer we are seeking.

None of the others have any chance of beating Obama.

Your saying it is so does not make it so. Perry can't even take down Romney so far, and Romney has a lot of the same baggage that Obama does. So just how do you expect us to believe that Perry can defeat Obama?

Daniels says people ought to cut Perry some slack and give him a little time.

How much time does Perry and his campaign staff need to develop a series of one minute responses to differing topics [maybe six to eight]? How much time does Perry need to set down and put those responses to memory? How much time does Perry need to practice giving those responses until he can do a creditable job of it?

It's not the peoples job to cut him slack and give him time. It's Perry's job to be presentable and knowledgeable about the issues. Perry still has some time to get his act together and develop his skills but the time isn't long, imo. There are two more debates coming up on Oct. 11 & 18 and I think that is the timeline Perry has to become a credible candidate or not. JMO.

That was a straw poll, not a primary.

Also look at the polls of GOP candidates vs Obama.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/president_obama_vs_republican_candidates.html

Obama is beating Cain by 10 points and in the real elections Obama would destroy Cain.

Perry has given awkward responses.

That's the least of it. He's a bomb-thrower. Calling Obama an "abject liar" - yes, Obama IS an abject liar, but a Republican can't SAY that out loud about the POTUS. (Of course, it's OK for democrats to call GWB every name in the book.)

Then, there's the "heartless" comment describing his own constituency. Insulting and condescending to people who have to pay for this idiocy.

I had high hopes for Perry- I even e-mailed his wife begging her to get him to run. He had everything going for him: humble background, Air Force pilot, tons of executive experience, love of country, good looks, etc. I am crushingly disappointed in him. He could've gone all the way but has blown it big-time.

That was a straw poll, not a primary.

A very representative straw poll of the GOP base, and the kind that couldn't be bought. Cain doesn't have much overall name recognition so far. That will change. We'll see how Cain starts polling against Obama as his name recognition builds.

Face it, Perry has fallen flat on his face so far, and I was willing to give him a chance. I haven't written him off yet, but your pathetic spin demanding that only Perry and Romney have a chance of beating Obama does nothing to help in that regard. Why don't you instead face the warts on your own candidate instead of trying to shove his warts down our throats?

He still does — don’t throw him under that bus for one mistake.

You say: "If not Perry, it's Romney and if it's Romney, it's Obama."

Why is that? Are they the only two running?

First, lets expand it a bit:

"If not Perry, it is Romney and if it is not Romney it is Christie and if it is Christie, its Obama."

We have a great bench of potential candidates if one totally disregards fund raising ability, contacts, campaign staff ability, polarization and attractiveness outside of our little echo-chamber.

Perry's debate presence is his biggest enemy with being perceived as yet another Bush Texan being the other, Romney has his albatross of RomneyCare™ Christie hates guns, unborn infants, and has other problems making Romney look like another Reagan in comparison; and the panhandler down the street has better fund raising abilities than the rest of the bench combined.

I fully understand the shallow American Idol-like charisma and the jingoism that we all are persevering on as the basis of our opinions (other than empty-headed drive-by bumper-sticker "He is a RINO" smears); but we need to look beyond the shallow sophism and consider what it takes to win not only enthusiasm in our own ranks, but the votes of the Independents and the donations of the traditional deep pockets.

The Executive Branch is now a multi-trillion dollar international slush-fund where not only our own domestic parasites are looting the treasury, but Europe and the rest of the world have a deep vested interest in keeping the gravy pouring in their direction. Under the tyranny of our current oppressors, they all will fight like the third monkey trying to get on the Ark. This sniping we are doing at our most viable (didn't say most likable or conservative) is a great boost to the enemy.
