In his CPAC speech today, Rick Perry came out swinging, criticizing Romneycare vigorously and stressing that there was no connection between good debating and good governing.
"As conservatives, we know that values and vision matter," Perry said. "It's not who is the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater that we need to elect. We need to elect the candidate with the best record and the best vision for this country."

Perry: I was a good debater after I was before a bad debater after before race to the top... Never mind.
Watch my commercials.
Screwing up a debate defeated Ford, defeated Jimmy Carter, helped elect Clinton, and helped defeat Algore. The way Perry is going now, he couldn’t stay even in a debate with Dennis Kucinich. I have great doubts about a candidate who knows what questions are coming and is so unprepared to respond. His answer re. Pakistan brought back images of Teddy and Roger Mudd. It shows a lack or preparation or a lack of confidence or both. Perry is off my list.
I agree and if Rick Perry wants to be that person he should stop defending the indefensible and STOP insulting those of us in Texas who opposed him on the matter!
Good. I voted for Bush twice, and this time I'm going with Romney.
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
While I have liked PERRY to this point I find his stance on Illegal Immigration more and more troubling. In state tuition for children of illegals? No! His reasoning was absurd!. Don’t build a fence? - WRONG ANSWER! He says if you are against his positions on this you have no heart. I can get that crap from the Democrats. It’s not a matter of not having a heart. It’s a matter of disincentivising illegals from wanting to come or stay here. If you keep giving them benefits it just gives them a reason to stay. And you start them on the “path” to democrat voting rolls!
Make it so uncomfortable that they will leave on their own!
If they want to come in LEGALLY, then I welcome them!
I’m glad to see him admit that he sucked.
He’s right. I don’t watch debates because they really don’t offer anything. I perfer to look at position papers and then measure people against what they accomplish. I’ve always liked the Contract with America because you knew what the GOP wanted to do. I wish they would come up with that again.
>>> “ a demagogue with the immigration issue, and calling 95% of conservatives heartless. <<<
Good grief! What conservatives are going to toss those illegal immigrants brought here through no fault of their own and who are applying and waiting on citizenship papers?
That is not demogoguery. It’s the truth. In spades!
I want a GOP nominee who can defeat Obama. Perry to this point is demonstrating — all by himself — that he cannot.
Mass communications skills are a prerequisite.
Four more years of Obama and this country won’t be recognizable. The GOP must defeat Obama. The Supreme Court is at stake.
“we will only accept the best we can find to beat Obama. ....but the best for the country and the future of our country.”
Well, Perry is the ONLY one that fits that description. So why detroy him in the primary? If Perry isn’t the nominee, it’s Romney. And if Romney is the nominee, we get 4 more years of Obama. Why don’t people get this?
And NO, Palin isn’t running and even if she were, she has ZERO chance of getting the nomination or beating Obama.
Any attack on Perry HELPS ROMNEY. I thought FReepers don’t want Romney to be the nominee, yet they are working tirelessly for that result.
Just sayin'
Thanks for your service.
“He says if you are against his positions on this you have no heart. I can get that crap from the Democrats.”
It sounded like advice taken from the book, Rules for Radicals. When under attack accuse the attacker of something more outlandish and indefensible (even if not true), taking the spotlight off you. Accusing opponents of his policy of being heartless for not wanting children to have an education is just the sort of outlandish accusation that would make Saul Alinsky proud.
I would, in a heartbeat.
“And to say we would prefer 4-more years of Obama is to be intellectually dishonest.”
I have been told by more than one FReeper that they will stay home on election day if their preferred candidate is not the GOP nominee. Practically speaking, what’s the difference?
Why settle for someone weak on illegal immigration and sympathetic to handouts and subsidies for illegals?
The first primary election is 6 months away and the general election is 14 months away.
We have time to make certain we get a candidate who will support all issues important to conservatives.
If Perry doesn’t want to get on board before the train leaves the station that is his perogative. I will not vote in the primary for anyone who is not committed to shutting down illegal immigration and eliminating freebies for them.
Keep on telling yourself that.
