After three debates, the consensus among conservative commentators is that GOP frontrunner Rick Perry is getting worse, not better. That's good news for Mitt Romney, who has been closing the gap with Perry in recent days. Intrade now sees the ex-Massachusetts governor as the most likely Republican nominee.
But its also good for Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator. He now may emerge from the long list of second-tier candidates.
Romney should be an easy target.

How do you lose a Senate race where you are the incumbent and then expect to be a viable Presidential Candidate? Some of these guys must be kidding themselves or there is some profit motive to running that I don’t understand.
Perry's my Governor, and I've voted for him twice in the six years I've lived in Texas. I was glad to do it, too, considering the alternatives.
That said, he's not the fire-breathing conservative that many of his supporters try to make him out to be. I've watched him long enough to know that he's a centrist Moderate, at best, who will bend to the will of the conservative base if they apply sufficient pressure to him.
That would have been good enough for me twenty years ago, but not now. The radical left has done so much damage to this country, that a go-along-get-along, business as usual president isn't going to cut it. We need a fearless, conservative reformer as our next president. Someone who will take an axe to the Socialist leviathan we call Washington DC.
Nothing less will do. The whole future of our country is riding on it.
They're just as blind as he is. This is the email I got from his campaign this morning .....
Tonight at the GOP debate, Rick Perry showed Americans again why there is so much excitement surrounding his candidacy. His debate victory proves that he's the one who will get America working again. If you haven't watched Gov. Perry's latest ad, see what all the buzz is about at RickPerry.org.
Rick Perry is clearly America's jobs governor - fostering an environment where over a million jobs have been created, even as the rest of the nation lost nearly 2.5 million jobs.
And Rick Perry is the only candidate with the courage to speak frankly about the dire financial conditions of Social Security - without resorting to the ridiculous scare tactics we so often hear from liberals. I'm very disappointed that Gov. Romney is resorting to demagoguery on this issue, sounding like liberals who scare seniors every election cycle.
Rick Perry will not only protect Social Security for seniors and those nearing retirement - he will also reform the system so that it's there for younger workers. Join me in voting for Gov. Perry's most defining debate moment at RickPerry.org, and help spread the message of Rick Perry's mission to get America working again!

Seriously?! Ugh.
They needed to work on him ten years ago before he accumulated a decade long record of open borders, eminent domain abuse, and crony capitalism. Fixing that would require six or eight years of flying strait as a minimum.
I like Santorum a lot, on paper, but he is not verbally feisty enough
You're absolutely right . . . it's easy to mistake Cain for Paul.
I like Santorum alot, but don’t think he could carry the front of the ticket. Maybe as VP. Remember, he lost his last election.
I very much like Santorum and would like to see his numbers move up. He has firm principles.
Anybody got a theory on why Perry shot to the top if we disagree with him on so many issue? Let’s count em up:
1) Trans TX Corridor
2) TX Dream Act
3) Border protection
4) Gardisil
5) Now we’ve caught him lying
6) Now we’ve see him in more than 1 debate that he can’t debate himself out of a paper bag
On the plus side, I have to agree with the late Molly Ivins. He’s got nice hair. He does look a lot like the Marlboro man and I don’t think he’s a closeted homosexual nor does he support gay special rights. He is pro-life from the get go, correct?
Man, what a choice. PLEASE SARAH, PRETTY PLEASE
I agree.
>> I dont think he is electable <<
I’m also doubtful about Perry’s ability to win, based not upon his Gardisil mistake, not on his immigration views, and not upon his ability to debate.
No, the thing that concerns me is that he often comes across as “grouchy.” And I can’t imagine that the American electorate is going to select a grouch as POTUS.
My issues is ...... Perry is a stinking Aggy.
I agree completely with you.
“When will the GOP get it?”
When they put up another Dole/McCain candidate who excels in one thing: dignified concession speeches, after putative president Less-Than-Zero is re-elected?
The only problem is that the death of the GOP could very possibly be accompanied by far more serious happenings.
Wish I weren’t at work on my lunch break so I could hear what Mark Steyn (subbing for Rush) has to say.
**Rick Santorum Rises**
I like that!
would vote for pro-lifer, Santorum in a heartbeat.
What don’t you like about pro-life?
Yes. Most people don't pay attention. They thought (1) he's a governor, and (2) he's from Texas. Hence, a strong conservative with a good shot at Obama. Honestly, the people I talk to have no idea how weak Perry is on illegal immigration, and once they find out, they're turned off. It just takes time for people to work out candidates' stands on the issues.
As for him looking like the Marlboro Man: Yuck. I think he's a little odd looking. Weird hair, head too small for his body, barrel chest. Nothing to do with his candidacy, of course, but I'm puzzled why some people think he's attractive.
Good heavens, you choose a candidate by a stupid debate? No wonder this country is in trouble. People voted for zero because he was such a great “orator.” Snort, snort.
Santorum stands for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Life first, because without it, you can’t have the others.
Vote for him!
