I have some ideas of my own about this, but I would be interested in others’ viewpoints. Mine comes from the Christian worldview, and that this is just part of the big Christ v Satan cosmic battle.

In their God-given conscience they KNOW it to be sin. They are convicted every time they act out on their lusts. They want to pretend there won't be any eternal consequences for turning themselves over to their perverse desires rather then repenting of them and turning themselves over to the living God. If they can convince themselves and others that their sin is "legitimate" they can lie to themselves believing that it is. All the while searing their own consciences and poisoning others. Thus the anger, activism and bullying toward anyone who dares speak up against what they have turned into a false god of perverted sexuality. Best to pray for such people because their minds and hearts have been blinded to the truth of their sin by the enemy of God.
