After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.
"No Ma'am," he told her.
"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.
"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.
This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.
The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.
"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."
Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....

HAR!
He’s so far behind on this thread, that when he finally replies to me I’ll be long gone and won’t see it...lol.
Your observations are basically without foundation...much like the so called "gay" movement...the folks who are jumping all over Governor Perry are very small in numbers, but like the faggots; large in volume..... I belive that most of them are supporter of Sarah Palin, whom I love for her "frank speak"...but no way is going to enter the fray....so they flail away at Perry. I also contend that other than Texans none of them knew what Guardasil was 6 months ago....and certainly Bachmann who had dozens of foster kids for "hire". Good for her...but 20+...how many "nanny's" did that take to look after those children?...and of course I know she paid those "nanny's" in accordance with IRS guidelines! Michelle..much like my wife when you have seemingly won an argument...STFU....I know it's in your "Jeans" to continue....MISTAKE...
I have been kinda wishing those two would be the ticket. Announce their allegiance early, none of this waiting for convention crap and both just get down to business and take care of it.
In that scenario the ticket would be unstoppable!
Texas Residential Construction Commission: What Happened?:
The short version: You put a commission in place to regulate builders to protect homeowners, and it will end up protecting builders, because builders have all the money, and have millions riding on what the commission does. The average homeowner could care less, and even when they do care, it's to the tune of a few thousand dollars.
So who is going to lobby? The homeowners? or the Builders?
The key is for government to do a minimum of regulations, just enough to make a fair playing field between competing interests, and then let the sides fight it out.
She was the Speaker of the House at the time.

Oddly, or interestingly, that was what a lot of headlines were saying last year about Palin and the TARP, like this one:
Palin on Tarp so for it before she was against it
My point being that anybody can take a few words, twist them around, and claim that someone changed their position.
You don't see a problem with that?
I like Herman Cain a whole lot, too.
I gave up my chance for a photo with him to give the 4 old ladies theirs and I’m glad I did. They were totally thrilled.
The question facing congress at that time was to TARP or not to TARP.
Yes, the letter makes no specific statement about which was the correct course of action.
These PerryHaters simply won’t let reality affect their constant smears and patting each other on the back.
Thankfully, there seem to be less than a dozen of them, so I guess I’ll consider them the vocal minority.
Again, winone, what is the scandal here regarding Perry? Is it you doing what liberals do and take things out of context, or ignore basic facts, in order to slime a specific candidate?
Okay bud...yep we are all doing this for the Love of Sarah....How bout putting your gun-sights on the right target?
The tea party is all of us, least once was. Perry might have decided that his politics were deserving of our admiration but that is not the case.
If you would like us all to just say oh well a few from Texas tell us he's great and the staunch conservative we have yearned for throughout the last decade, go right ahead but I know you know he's not.
So as we ALL said at one time, this time we are getting it right.
Guess what, your guy's not right.
The RGA and the DGA both sent the letter. Palin was a part of the RGA then. Did she quit the group in protest?
Nope, which I actually respect, because there is nothing to this letter. We’re now on a “well look who it is was sent to!!!” meme, since the TARP claims have been blown out of the water.
It’s hilarious.
Count the Palin thread posters then count your perry threads....I think truthfully your ability to determine spread could be useful to the DNC!....lol
Next he’ll be claiming he didn’t support raising the debt ceiling $2.4 TRILLION dollars.
Try this...pay to play Texas style.
Well you certainly did the a very warm and self-centered deed for sure!
Well, that’s how guilt-by-association arguments go. We want to tear down Rick Perry, so we’ll accuse him falsely of actively supporting TARP based on a letter that says no such thing, while we ignore other candidates who actually said they supported TARP.
And if there’s some good people that have to be smeared int the process, we’ll do that. Take no prisoners, we have to burn the village down to clear the brush for some other candidate to come in and clean up the mess, even if people will accuse that candidate of the same thing, and already have.
What does that have to do with this letter?
You people are all over the place. We get it. You don’t like Perry, and will make up any smear, and post any liberal information from the media (like your graph from the Dallas Morning News) to smear and slime him on a so-called conservative website.
