After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.
"No Ma'am," he told her.
"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.
"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.
This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.
The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.
"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."
Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....

Whoever wrote *thread fail* was WRONG!
Another of Jim’s flash points is supporting pro-choice candidates. And Perry is so solidly anti-abortion that he tried to give the “retard shot” to all of the young girls in Texas so nobody would ever have sex with them.
FR should be feting Perry, not destroying him!
Thread Fail....?.....lol
The more I learn about Perry the more concerned I am.
The only politician in this thread that has been quoted speaking positively for TARP is Sarah Palin.
That you and the other handful of PerryHaters refuse to acknowledge it is one thing, but I’m guessing plenty of others didn’t know about Ms. Crony Capitalism herself, SARAH PALIN’S, support of TARP, which is crony capitalism at its best.
Whoops!
It only calls for them to do something but never specifically says what.Given the fact that TARP was the major headline of the day, only a fool could believe this letter was anything other than a strong expression of support for TARP. It was the only measure on the table under discussion.
Face facts. Palin has flip-flopped on TARP to push her "crony capitalism" meme. If she does get into the race, her support of TARP is a ready-made issue. How could she support TARP when she now rails against 'crony capitalism'? There is no way she could recover from that among the GOP base. /failthreadx2
Bob Perry will put money down on the table to protect his business interests. He will also put money in to conservatives pockets. Big money! And the people he gives to usually never hear anything from Bob. I know numerous politicians that Perry has given money to and they have never met the man and never heard from him. That is not the case with Rick Perry. And so what?
I know Bob Perry, personally. He is one of the finest men you will ever meet. Totally self-made. Was a school teacher before he started building homes. I can only think of one time I did not agree with Bob and that was earlier this year when he went up against the sanctuary city bill in Texas.
Now here is the most important thing about Bob Perry, American patriot. He was THE person that funded the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Yes! THE Swifties. So, if not for Bob Perry John Kerry might have been the president of the United States. You can take a swing at Bob for some things but what he did to scuttle John Kerry speaks for itself.
After he signed a letter (posted above) supporting TARP, Perry released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....
Wonder how he'll explain this:
Perry's Texas Enterprise Slush Fund "invested" $20 million tax dollars to bailout Countrywide mortgage. Perry actually inveigled Texans into believing Countrywide Mtge was a viable operation--when it was a notorious company of crooks at the heart of the trillion dollar bailouts US taxpayers are saddled with.
Perry's Texas Enterprise Slush Fund awarded CW $20 million for what Perry laughingly referred to as "creating jobs." The TEF also gave away $$millions in grants to Perry's cronies (who then kickbacked to Perry's campaigns).
Perry will lie right to your face. The guy is nothing more than a con man. Reminds me of the character in "Paper Moon"---set during the Great Depression. The conman sells Bibles to widowed women pretending the deceased ordered the Bible....inveigling the distraught widows to overpay b/c the Holy Book's inscribed with their names.
Perry's campaign theme is "There's One Born Every Minute."
No doubt he provided a service to us all...
However, there is no exception the way politics are conducted well it’s broke and it needs to be fixed no matter who’s doing it.
No more pay to play.
Wow.
Some knowledge I did not know thanks!
Sarah's fight against crony capitalism is going to hurt her? Palin has a twenty year history of fighting crony capitalism, while Perry has a twenty year history of enabling it. Do the math.

Hmmmmm...both working in politics for equal lengths of time...would that make them both “career politicians” ??
We can start with a simple campaign finance law on the federal level. It would be one sentence: "No person may give monies or anything else of value to a candidate running for elected federal office unless the person is legally registered to vote for the candidate".
That's it. No more lobbyists or PACS. You would no longer have your Congressman or Senator running all over the country collecting money from people they do not represent. This would push new people in to the process because constitutants would have so much power. And because the Congressman or Senator HAD to get their money from those they represent they would be HOME all the time. It would also decay the incumbents inherent advantage in re-elections. But alas, this would never pass.
Do this, open up oil exploration, go to a flat tax for everyone, sell off most federal lands and buildings, have Congress in session 4 months a year, restructure nonprofit corporations so they are only entities that feed, house and cloth people and do a few more things and we are good to go. I'd also suggest that we leave Afganistan immediately. Take a good number of troops and build new facilities on the US/Mexican border and let them "train" there. Have all the troops in Iraq move to the important oil infrastructure location in Iraw and remove all the oil until both wars are paid for and every US soldier and their families have each been give the sum of $1,000,000 from the sale of Iraq oil.
As far as Libya goes? Impeach Obama and send him to Libya along with the wookie. They can have Libya and do what they want with it.
First, it’s not “infamous”. It is a letter from the RGA supporting action by the government to stimulate the economy. Conservatives support actions by the government to stimulate the economy. There are many actions government can take to stimulate the economy. The democrats refused to take them.
Second, TARP was passed in 2008, with President Bush, it’s not the 2009 recovery act. Getting those two confused isn’t helping your argument.
May we make the right choice. May we be smarter than the bamboozled useful idiot leftists. I pray that the past lifelong Democrat and Al Gore supporter and campaign manager is not another snake oil salesman selling us more styrofoam Greek columns.
“No person may give monies or anything else of value to a candidate running for elected federal office unless the person is legally registered to vote for the candidate”.
Although nice in theory, that pesky Free Speech thing may get in the way.
Thank you for this honest personal perspective.
