With the outcome of his own reelection effort 14 difficult months away, President Obama suffered a sharp rebuke Tuesday when voters in New York elected a conservative Republican to represent a Democratic district that has not been in GOP hands since the 1920s.
Bob Turner, the winner, cast the election as a referendum on Obama’s stewardship of the economy and, in the state’s Ninth Congressional District, which has a large population of Orthodox Jewish voters, the president’s position on Israel.

Thanks for the concern, but I’m a professional Tokyo drinker. I had a grapefruit chu-hi (never seen a green tea one), then a Hub Ale during my business meeting, followed by two rum-cokes, now am on my canned JD-hiball as I walk home. If there’s anything more you need to know about the Tokyo boozers, just let me know. I do Hoppy at the Izakaya sometimes, but prefer atsukan nihonshu along with a big beer. I’m not going to mention the same-sex marriage thing, but Bloombird did unintentionally help to buy this election for Turner by corrupting those state senators who were against it and then changed their vote. Weprin: in favor of same-sex marriage. Turner and most of Brooklyn: against it.
Also I wouldn’t dare mention the Victory Mosque. Weprin for; Turner and the rest of the unintimidated: against.
