New Yorks 9th Congressional District isnt the likeliest place for a national political referendum.
Vice President Al Gore won it with 67 percent of the vote in 2000, and Barack Obama carried it by 11 percentage points eight years later. It has been held by a string of high-profile Democrats including Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and the late Geraldine Ferraro for decades. And yet, the special election set for Tuesday in the Brooklyn and Queens areas between state Assemblyman David Weprin (D) and businessman Bob Turner (R) a race occasioned by the scandal and subsequent resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) is surprisingly close, the result, many observers suggest, of the toxic national political environment and Obamas low poll ratings.
Obama wins no popularity contests here, said Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic consultant in New York.
In a Siena College poll released late last week, Turner held a six-point edge over Weprin. Obamas approval rating stood at 43 percent, with 54 percent disapproving.
Certainly Obama job approval in the 40s as opposed to 50s depresses the Democratic base, said one Democratic consultant who is monitoring the race, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the election frankly. And in a small-turnout electorate, this has consequences.
Republicans and even some Democrats are painting the race as an Obama referendum. Ed Koch, a Democratic former mayor of New York, endorsed Turner and likened the impact of his possible victory to that of Republican Scott Brown in 2010 in the special Senate election in Massachusetts. A vote for Turner, Koch said, would register a protest against the positions of President Obama and the Republican leadership on a number of key issues.

GOTFV PEOPLE!
I wouldn’t count my chickens before they’re hatched in this District but it would speak volumes about Obama’s and the Dems vulnerability. Hopefully, it breaks those folks’ lifelong addiction to pulling the D lever regardless of who’s on it. The R, given the District, will be a moderate, or as we like to say here at FR, a “RINO.”
If Republicans really win this, it bodes well for their chances in urban working class areas.
I agree. Don’t believe the lead for a second.
WaPo's so-called journalists should learn English.
Turner has been ahead now by about 5 for a couple weeks. This combined with the endorsement of Dov Hikind, who usually backs winners, looks good.
gotv of course but
“Obamas approval rating stood at 43 percent, with 54 percent disapproving.”
makes the lead very robust
Something tells me that it’ll go Dem.....It depends on how often the Dems vote this time I suppose..
WaPo's so-called journalists should learn English.
LOL. They didn't write too good, did they?
Never count on the results until the final litigation has run its course.
LOL. A slight adjustment in the spelling of this guy's name and a humorous and appropriate name would result. (Anyone read Catch 22?)
so sadly true
Affirmative, and being in the Compost confirms it.
Gotta love it. Its the "toxic environment". "Both sides" are at fault for the loss. Great spinning for the love of your life, Chris.
Which one is Weprin? (not that it matters really in that picture...)
Cam the Jews of NY do it? I pray they know Hashem will guide them to the promise land again. Just say NOBAMA.
