"Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII" (Berkley), by Chester Nez with Judith Schiess Avila: You don't need to be a fan of World War II literature to appreciate this memoir by Chester Nez and his co-author Judith Schiess Avila, a code talker scholar.

"Code Talker" is a fascinating melange of combat in the Pacific theater, the history of the Navajo people and the development of a uniquely American code that remained unbroken by the Japanese throughout the war and classified until 1968.

I suppose in a way, it was. If you consider say, a tank, to be an object, and the Navajo word for Turtle, to also be an object, then yes, it was OO.

I gather they refer to the pattern of land ownership in NW NM from Gallup to Shiprock. Some being Navajo tribal lands, some BLM, some USFS, some Army CE, some private.

I once drove up the Devils Hwy (Old US Route 666) from Gallup into Utah, dramatic and inspiring landscape..

I believe the Sioux were also involved in “Codetalker” operations but for the Army.

God Bless All of America’s Code Talkers. God Bless the Navajo Nation. America’s Code Talkers deserve every praise the Nation of America can bestow.

“These bilingual Native Americans are also referred to as “code talkers” and, while generally associated with Navajo speakers, it is reported that “code talking” was pioneered by Choctaw Indians serving in the U.S. Army during World War I and that, in addition to the Navajo code talkers, Cherokee, Choctaw and Comanche soldiers were also used as code talkers during World War II.”

I know of no other people who have suffered so by the actions of their government and yet have in turn served so honorably.

Avid listener to ABC’s book reviewer John Bachelor. He had a guest on who traced lanuguage origins and claims that Basque and Navaho languages have a common ancestor .

The author also cited those same linguistic similaritys; language construction and common terms with another language group; Korean and another language spoken by a caucasion group ..

The whole thing blew me away. Has any FR heard that broadcast ?

"Definitely going to be picking this one up."

Just make sure you get the English translation. If you get the Navajo edition you'll be S-O-L ;-)

Much of the eastern section of the Navajo Nation's land located in New Mexico is not continuous and is interspaced with various private and government land holdings.

This is from Wikipedia explains the main cause:
The history of the Eastern border was mostly shaped by the Dawes Act of 1887. In an attempt to "civilize" Native Americans, the federal government divided selected tribal lands into small parcels (allotments) and promised U.S.-citizenship to those who had been deemed successful at farming the land according to the standards of the time. Unfarmed or "unsuccessfully" farmed parcels were subsequently declared "unclaimed" and auctioned off to Anglo-American settlers. The program continued until 1934. While the Navajo reservation proper was excluded from the act's provisions, the result for the Eastern border was a patchwork of reservation and non-reservation land, known as the "checkerboard" area.

Your post of #10 is so true. God Bless All in addition to the Navajo code talkers, Cherokee, Choctaw and Comanche soldiers were also used as code talkers during World War II, and it is reported that “code talking” was pioneered by Choctaw Indians serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. All deserve America's praise.

Thank You for the mention of these fine peoples who served and honored our America!

If you want to see the want a central planning/entitlement government does to it’s citizens look no farther than the Native American Reservations.

I believe that it has more to do with the fact that Navajo Reservation or nation is not one continuous stretch of land but rather a patch work of land owner ship across North Western NM and Arizona. For example there is a Navajo Reservation up around Farmington NM and another over close to the Grand Canyon. Also some in NE Arizona. RitchieAprile you are also correct.
