Rick Perry fails to impress in GOP debate
washingtonpost ^ | 09/07/2011 | Jennifer Rubin

Texas Gov. Rick Perry needed to show in tonight’s debate that he is presidential, substantive and ready for prime time. While he made no major gaffes, he certainly did not stand out in the crowd. He took hits on his views on Social Security and on mandatory HPV testing, and unsurprisingly did not have convincing comebacks. At times — on foreign policy and on global warming — he seemed to search for words. He will need to lose the frozen grin as well. His best moment came near the end of the debate when he gave a measured, tough-minded defense of Texas’s high rate of executions, explaining the circumstances under which you will pay “the ultimate penalty” in Texas.

Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann turned in solid performances. Nevertheless, it was largely a Romney vs. Perry affair.

As you know, he didn’t decide to run until a couple of months ago.

"I think he is luring them in.

This aint his first rodeo."

I doubt that. Rick Perry is famously not a great debater. This is only like his 5th debate in the last decade.

That said, when you're the front runner, you don't NEED to win debates; you only need not to lose them with a major flub.

The chief advantage of debates is to make up ground by standing out. You don't particularly need to stand out if you don't have ground to make up.

The WP has it wrong. All Rick Perry has to do to 'win' a debate at this point is to walk away without a quotable gaffe. In that sense, he won. Keep in mind I'm not particularly a Perry supporter.

Perry won because he didn't lose.

I'm a baby-boomer and I have done the math.

My mother-in-law used to buy into the democRAT rhetoric of how those evil Republicans were going to take away her SS check. I could never convince here it was campaign rhetoric and she should not vote for democRATs because they use such tactics to scare her. She never believed me and voted democRAT anyway.

Perry made it clear that the book was about intellectual differences and was intended to stir thought.
Obama claims to have the answers.

We know where that got us.

I expect Perry has responses and plans that he will reveal.

I hope you are right because I could support Santorum, but I don't see it happening.

This is nonsense. Rick Perry, in his first National debate, acquitted himself quite well. He was the one who had the most to lose, and he held his own against the snarky onslaught of the odious duo of DIM moderators, and against Mitt, who was far better than in 2008.
IMO there are only three real possible candidates: Mitt, Perry, and Sarah. The battle now is between Mitt and Perry, until or if Sarah jumps in.
I think Sarah will be the stronger true conservative candidate with less baggage.
We can all agree that any one if them is a giant compared to the diminishing midget that was obama.

It’s a Vaccine. Mandatory Vaccines.

The idea behind mandatory vaccines for anything is that people would catch diseases in school.

Are people having sex in school?

There is so much garbage in Perry’s record.

We’ll be hearing a lot about Gardasil.

Especially against Goofball Paul.

Agreed. You are gonna get slammed on that comment but you are correct. Paul isn't any type of viable candidate. Paul has some interesting and thoughtful views on a number of economic issues. But his views on foreign policy are scary and show a complete lack of understanding about what is going on in the modern world. His views are very scary. It's as if he believes America could be an isolationist country, the way we were before Pearl Harbor. I really wish we could but the world will not let us. Paul is an absolute fool in this regard.

Social Security, by it’s very nature is a Ponzi scheme: people at the top being paid off by people on the bottom paying in. When the number of people at the bottom paying in shrinks, they can’t pay out to those on top, and it inevitably collapses. This is not rocket science, and nothing new. The WSJ has been talking about SS as a Ponzi scene for 30+ years.

Gardasil is like Whitewater or birth certificates or being a B-movie actor. It doesn’t stop presidents from being elected, just a thorn in their side.

You said that I thought he was lame.

No, I said, I never said he was lame, those are your words which was 100% accurate.

In your post #17 you said, He only fought off all the long knives, yup he was lame.

Don’t try holding me responsible for what you say and don’t call me a liar when I quote you.

Actually I am surprised that Perry didnt rub obama’s nose in his snubbing of Texas in the wake of 2 major wildfires and the worst drought ever.

I dont know if it is true but if it is , that is obama taking the card off the table after dissing us for years.

Believe me Perry won’t let this punk go.

Definition of Ponzi Scheme:

A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to separate investors, not from any actual profit earned by the organization, but from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors.

That's precisely how Social Security operates...most Americans think they are getting back what they "paid in" - they are not. Perry is correct...he could have been much clearer in defending himself, though, in explaining this definition and pointing out the fact this is precisely how Social Security operates.

I agree with Jennifer Rubin's assessment; except I would have inclued Newt in the list of those with solid performances. Actally, I thought everyone gave a solid performance except Perry. He got his butt kicked; he was not prepared for this Debate.

What happened to all the Michele Bachmann supporters on FR?

There used to be a steady stream of news items being posted for Bachmann, but now there are like ZERO.

I just scanned 75 posts here, before coffee, and have not seen a single post in support of her.
