Obama Urges Congress to 'Get on Board' With More Infrastructure Spending
FoxNews ^ | 9/5/11

President Obama called for Congress to "get on board" with more infrastructure spending and a new round of middle-class tax cuts Monday, as he delivered a campaign-style speech that served as a warm-up to a vital jobs address later this week.

Interrupted repeatedly by chants of "four more years," the president marked Labor Day in Detroit at a rally with the nation's top labor leaders. He used the address to underscore his alliance with the labor movement -- at a time when cracks are starting to show -- and preview some of the proposals he'll outline during a speech Thursday before a joint session of Congress.

Obama effectively dared Republicans to oppose what he described as the "new way forward" for America. He said the upcoming session would reveal whether there are "straight-shooters" in Congress and whether Republicans will put "country before party."

"Show us what you got," he said, in a message aimed at GOP lawmakers. "No more manufactured crises, no more games."

The president said he didn't want to spill all the details of his upcoming address, but highlighted a few portions. Foremost, the president called for new investment in roads and bridges.

Obama Urges Congress to 'Get on Board' With More Infrastructure Spending

Obama's found at least one "shovel ready job" since being elected. He's been shoveling #$%A* on the American people from day one.

"Didn't the government already spend a trillion dollars on "shovel-ready projects"? How can there possibly be a single shovel-ready project left?"

"Pave 'em again! Pave 'em again! Harder! Harder!"

Mostly around here they spend the spring and summer patching up the wear and tear on the roads from a bad winter.

This year they haven’t done squat. They patched the very worst of the holes and left the rest, Nothing has been resurfaced, nothing has been done about the big cracks that will expand when they freeze and thaw.

One of my relatives, a teacher, was trying to convince us that we should support her union, because we certainly wouldn’t want HER retirement affected. When some of us said the money’s gone, she became outraged at how heartless we all were.

I simply pointed to one of the infants in the room and asked her if how much she thought HER retirement should cost THEM, (since we were making this personal.)

She actually blushed and had nothing to say.

Wouldn’t you expect that in Illinois? I think it goes like this.. We need money for 500 miles of “ infrastructure” and they claim a rounding error with 500 feet. Seriously, I never travel more than 50 to 100 miles without “roadwork” signs. I guess we drive 4000 miles a week, at least. Just in Chicago and I can say it was no different than construction in Dallas.

I totally agree with you. Same piece of construction time after time. Maybe they are using “green asphalt”. Someone could have a lot of satisfaction comparing miles of “ infrastructure” to unemployment numbers. Satellite or GPS data could be used.

Cut spending by eliminating federal agencies and firing 200,000+ that work for them.

Don’t increase spending one cent!

“He sends out Maxine Waters to tell us all to go to hell?”

No. We just have to entertain her as a houseguest for a month. And, we have to pretend we are having a lot of fun. Any failure to pretend and the housestay is extended for another week.

A friend of mine just said we should borrow more money because the interest rates are practically zero. I said but we already have 15 trillion dollars in debt. She said guarantee that we will borrow more for infrastructure....I am kinda spooked that she knew this was going to happen before all of us did. lol.
