UPDATE 7:30 P.M.: Mark Stanford, the fire chief for the Texas Forest Service , said subdivisions have been evacuated there but they have no estimate on what structures have been lost.
People are being told to evacuate to the First Baptist Church in Smithville and Bastrop Middle School, Stanford said.
In addition, State Highways 71 and 21 in Bastrop County have been closed, Stanford said.
Update, 6:48 p.m.: Wildfires have consumed more than 6,000 acres in Bastrop County, and firefighters are still working to get the blazes under control.
According to Bastrop Police Department Spokesman Michal Hubbard, hundreds of homes have been evacuated, including those at the Colony, west of the city of Bastrop, and Tahitian Village to the east. Several structures have been lost, he said

That is why I am saying that he is busy. He can’t do anything so he is going to continue running for President.
Compare and contrast to Obama who didn’t visit the East coast until today. He went to Camp David before he toured the damage from Irene.
I live in a rural setting as well with volunteers...
They get it done.
Glad to know also about the c130’s etc.
I have no idea what goes on there, but I DO remember the earlier fires being largely ignored by Washington, like the Nashville floods were as well.
Keeping good thoughts for Texas, always...
I’m here in the middle of it all and we need rain, but I doubt that Perry or Obama can make it rain.
All I can do is pray that you guys are going to be alright. I sincerely hope rain comes and soon. I would LOVE that Hurricane to just move to Texas NOW!
We’ve been trying to hire a hurricane and they are just like Gen X, they quit before the job starts.
Is that Cedar Creek that is west of Bastrop?
Does anybody know if the 300 homes already lost in Bastrop include those in the Tahitian Village subdivision?
I have a friend who owns a home in that neighborhood.
I live 40 miles from Bastrop and you can see and smell the smoke!
Absolutely horrible wind in East Texas that I hope is not the same in the south. But probably is. I drove back from Houston yesterday..and the winds were fierce..even without the added fuel of a fire.
Pray for rain.
Goodhair moved out of the Governor’s mansion (due to arson and rebuild)sometime back and I have not heard of his return.
I believe his temporary housing, location of the famous coyote shoot, is in the vicinity of one of the fires...
BTW, my weather radar shows 5 fires on Fort Hood... Lots of smoke in our air... the Bastrop plume appears to be over 70 miles long. These plumes will show up on any good weather radar display...
A lot of disasters are ignored, unless they are politically expedient.
Pray for rain. But since a flood usually follows a drought..that could be just as devastating.
Pick your poison.
Fire in Bastrop area has consumed 14,000 acres and is 16 miles long at this time.
You Ain’t Kidding.
I have propery in Austin and in New Orleans.
We did not flood and we have not burned.
Just a bit stressful.
Very true...and stay safe.
Pray for rain.
Are you by any chance a rittre ronery?
Sometimes, laughter is a great stress relief.
Cheers!
I peeked at the fires at the Google Earth fire site. You can get to it from here.

It looks like very few states don’t have active fires.
If the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is a credible source, over 81% of the state in an exceptional drought. And none of the state is not in some drought condition.
Still, the resiliency of Texans is legendary and the Lone Star State will come roaring back to its rightful place of supremacy. God Blessed Texas in the past and may He Bless us today and forever.
Your Katrina-Tx Fire-Media is probably very well on target.
But truthfully, unless Perry has a super duper magic rain dance in his repitoir, he can’t fix it.
Dewhurst has the power to activate the state response if necessary. The Feds ain’t in the mix, imho.
But you are right...perception is reality. (much like Katrina)
