UPDATE 7:30 P.M.: Mark Stanford, the fire chief for the Texas Forest Service , said subdivisions have been evacuated there but they have no estimate on what structures have been lost.

People are being told to evacuate to the First Baptist Church in Smithville and Bastrop Middle School, Stanford said.

In addition, State Highways 71 and 21 in Bastrop County have been closed, Stanford said.

Update, 6:48 p.m.: Wildfires have consumed more than 6,000 acres in Bastrop County, and firefighters are still working to get the blazes under control.

According to Bastrop Police Department Spokesman Michal Hubbard, hundreds of homes have been evacuated, including those at the Colony, west of the city of Bastrop, and Tahitian Village to the east. Several structures have been lost, he said

Very smart of you. I pray that you don’t have to leave, but if you do, I pray you stay safe...and that nothing is lost!

The Bastrop fires started at least yesterday. Last night I got word while I was at work that they were evacuating the animals from the Bastrop animal shelter, and needed volunteers for various tasks. Animals got to Austin around 11:30 last night. Got about 160 dogs in. only have room for 60. Adoption fees are waived. Don’t care about the money. Just get these dogs into a good home so we can save as many canine lives as possible.
They are also seeking foster families for animals. So if you are in a safe area near austin and you can take a pet for a week or two, contact Austin Pets Alive and they can help you feill out an application. Phone interview will be rushed through, followed by “come on down and pick out a dog.”

I don't ask the Lord for help in temporal things.. other people have much more temporal problems than I have.

He's pushed Texas right up to the edge of the cliff 100x more than he bought us a round of drinks and nachos. Again, other people across the globe have faced 100x more horror than this drought and incipient fire have inconvenienced us with.

So I'm just not going to ask. I'm just going to have faith that he will keep us in the picture...in one fashion or another. In his own time.

To ask otherwise would be impertinent and ungrateful and assuming he loves us more than any other of his children on earth.

I will serve him humble and weak.

I’m sorry I’m nowhere near Austin - about 350 miles north on the South Plains.

But I will post the info on my Facebook page and maybe someone can help. Maybe if others have Facebook pages they could also post the info.

Good luck and be safe!

Pretty much nuthin better than calling again and hearing your friend’s voice...saying she and the family are in no danger, nor were they.

Thank you Lord Jesus!!!

Finally, the wind has calmed down tonight. Should slow the fires.

Hopefully tomorrow the fire crews can get a handle on things.

From all I’ve read, somewhere between 600 and 700 houses have been lost in the CenTex area.

Yes, hundreds of homes lost and massive dislocation.

We 'pride' ourselves on our self-sufficiency and git-er-done attitude, but these fires have humbled us.. and we are a very cautious people, taking everyday safety threats seriously.

This could have been much worse.

My cousin has been a life long volunteer firefighter as well as being employed in the Forest Service and resides in Bastrop. His wife moved their kids and what belongings she could gather quickly to the in laws in Elgin. He is still battling the fire. Please be safe Mark.
