A Hurricane of Hype
Minneapolis StarTribune ^

Posted on 08/28/2011 6:28:09 AM PDT by kelsiejackson

It's a hurricane, not Armageddon. Good grief. A Category 1 storm, you'd think "Irene" was the worst storm America has ever endured.

Don't rain on NN's thread. She will cry, throw a fit and tell the mods to make you stop. Best to just stay away and let her have her fake catastrophic storm parade. Pathetic. Sorry to say she is from my state, most of us don't want hurricanes and we don't exaggerate and make little tropical storms into Katrina's. My sister lives in MD, 2 nieces in NJ that live about 2 miles from the coast. Nada, they slept through it. A couple of weeks ago they had a lot of rain and some water in the basement, with Irene, none, that tells me all I need to know. Photobucket

I wonder how many were killed in traffic accidents, had heart attacks, etc. while evacuating. Bet it’s way more than 10 but we won’t ever hear about those.

>>I’m sorry you lost your home in Ike. I hope you were able to replace her.<<

Actually I didn’t replace. I did have good insurance but I also own a 40’ motor coach which was stored at that time and wasn’t damaged and decided it was time to try “land yachting”. I now live in my coach.

Ah, the poster who claimed the NHC was lying about the barometric pressure, here to stink up this thread as well.

It is a miracle and when I saw the devastation, I could not believe there were so few lives lost. When you were on the turnpike you could see almost all the way to the ocean. It seemed like every tree was either toppled or topped. There was no way to describe how it looked unless you were there to see it in person. I watched it on the news and no matter how hard they tried, it never looked as bad as it really was.

I can’t even imagine what it looked like after Katrina. I’m sure it was even worse. Now that, was a catastrophic storm.

The eleven year old boy was killed when a tree fell into the apartment he lived in.

One reason I left the Tampa area and moved to South Florida, too damn cold in the winter.

It is kind of fun, in a weird sort of way. Cold showers feel good, people can’t watch tv or play on the computer so everyone takes turns visiting everyone, sitting outside at night talking with candles or lanterns, grilling the food that was in the freezer. Many don’t have generators, we do so we just cooked all the food in the freezer and told everyone to come on over. After a while you get used to it, when the power comes back on, I’m often a little sad.

We have had one of the hottest, driest summers ever that I can recall. I was hoping we would get a couple of good feeder bands instead we just got drier and hotter as Irene sucked us dry. I’m glad you got some rain. I hope TX gets some. I know it has been really bad there.

I wish I could say none. South Florida, been in FL all of my life, needless to say, more than I can recall. After a while, you sort of learn to ignore the small ones but a Cat3-5 gets my attention real quick and we prepare to evacuate since the Atlantic is 40’ outside my back door.

Almost every year I have to have my boat pulled out and dry docked at the marina. Even with a strong tropical depression because it’s on a lift and we are on the open Atlantic. The waves come up under it and will float it off and bang it against the seawall. Expensive little suckers to maintain when you live in down here.

I remember 2004 very well. We evacuated 1-2 times, ended up getting nothing. The Ivan, Karl, Charley, Frances year.

The hottest after a hurricane award goes to Andrew. No wind, sun, it was 95 degrees in our living room and not a breath of air. We took cold showers, swam in the ocean, sat outside until late at night, a couple of nights put the couches outside and slept on them. After a few days the breezes returned them it wasn’t so bad.

Ahhhh but it’s so worth it is it not?

We live about 20 miles inland so we don’t worry about floods and don’t have to evacuate at all but I’d bug out if a 4 or 5 was heading our way.

During our multiple hurricane season of Charley, Frances and Jeanne a bunch of people headed to Central Florida, just where all three intersected! Who would have thought Orlando and Lakeland would get multiple strikes?

Ah dirtboy, boy who desperately wants to make Irene into a catastrophic storm when it’s not and that has now been proven false... whatcha doing here stinking up this thread? See the title of this thread? Now head on over to NN’s thread and continue on with your fake catastrophic storm stories. Bye now.

Come on, it’s not only 3 days. Freezes in the Tampa area are common and frequent. I lived there and still have many many friends and family members there. It is also hotter there in the summer and the sea breeze is from the Gulf which is a hot breeze. Southeasterly’s down here are like natures air conditioning.

Don’t get me wrong, I prefer anywhere in FL to any place in the US, but I’ve tried both and prefer South Florida. The fishing is much better and we can get lobster too. I do miss the Blue Crab though.
