A Hurricane of Hype
Minneapolis StarTribune ^

Posted on 08/28/2011 6:28:09 AM PDT by kelsiejackson

It's a hurricane, not Armageddon. Good grief. A Category 1 storm, you'd think "Irene" was the worst storm America has ever endured.

This would probably make you chuckle. Over in Maryland, in Cecil County, the Supermarket was closed while the fast-food joints were open, pretty ironic if you ask me. And this was also on Saturday, when the rain was starting to pour really hard.

I think it was CNN which showed a sailboat actually rocking back and forth - it was catastrophic.

The huge manitee!

You are quite correct. We keep at least a week’s worth of non-perishable food and water, plus propane plus batteries and, when it’s not ridiculously expensive, even kerosene on hand at all times. NC gets ice storms, we get tornados and we get hurricanes. All can knock out power for at least a week. Of these, the only ones that come with almost no warning are the tornados, which is why April’s event was so destructive. We see the others coming and have up to a week to prepare (I was ready by Tuesday night).

Now, one can say that the current economic climate is such that it’s something just to have tonight’s meal on the table, much less have something in the pantry against seven rainy or powerless days, but we really do need to man up just a little.

Considering I just got a phonecall from my daughter who said her neighborhood was devastated from this storm, you can shut up and deal with your ignorance!

This is a political storm for the prissy politicians in the White House and the elites in the N.E.

Yup, first Category Zero hurricane in history.

Sounds reasonable and prudent. The worst we’ve ever had was 110 mph winds for about 12 hours, 10-12 inches of rain, and no electricity for about 14 hours.

It was mostly boring and hot.

The financial losses from the shut down will be more than the damage from the storm.

Hurricane hyperbole never goes out of style

Patrik Jonsson | The Christian Science Monitor | Aug 27, 2011

On one 24-hour news channel, a correspondent described the calm before hurricane Irene as the calm before a B-movie zombie attack. One anchor proclaimed the storm to be “as big as Europe.” Elsewhere, the hurricane was touted as the storm of a lifetime.

Storm hype is of course nothing new, neither is saying overwrought things when trying to fill up hours of airtime.

But as the hurricane approached, the fever pitch of the Irene coverage took on a life of its own, with government officials leading a chorus of caution even as closer watchers of the weather, especially on the ground in North Carolina, grew increasingly convinced that Irene would not strengthen, but steadily weaken instead into something closer to a massive tropical storm.

On one network, “they are desperately trying to [show] a nail, a shingle, anything. It’s getting embarrassing,” one Internet commenter said as Irene’s core made landfall with 74 mile-per-hour ground speed readings in many locations near its eye – right on the line between a tropical storm and a hurricane. Days earlier, forecasters believed a catastrophic Category 4 storm was a distinct possibility.

Boy, you got that right, grellis.

I live in Dearborn and we had a storm last month the day I was admitted to the hospital. We lost power for four days. (It doesn’t take much with DTE.) And there was a live power line across my neighbor’s and my back yards. Homes one street over had to be evacuated because of a broken gas line. Downed trees were all over the place.

We didn’t even make the national news. Where’s my FEMA check? All those votes for Obama from Michigan did a lot of good.
