Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Prayers are up!
The Infra-red satellite loop shows an obviously weakening storm — surprisingly so, but very much welcomed.
What’s more — it’s over 83° water: I have no idea why it would be weakening at all.
Same here in the Charleston area.
I should have added the link to that satellite loop.
Don’t know where the NWS got there info, but it sho’ ain’t sunny!
It’s a strange storm, isn’t it? Instead of strengthening, it stays around 100-110 mph, but it just gets a little bigger. Something is messing up the backside of it as well. I don’t know enough about meteorology to understand a lot of what’s in play, but the southwest edge of the storm is just sort of...not there. It’s like it only has 3/4 of an eyewall. It almost looks like it’s trying to fall apart, where it should be strengthening somewhat.

Oh yes. 1 mile from the bay. The eye should pass directly overhead. She will sincerely regret the decision the first time the windows begin to rattle.
we have lots of low ground too. The places they are evacuating are really low. I agree about New Orleans. Clearly no comparison. I don’t know how much high ground we have left on the other hand with a 10 foot storm surge.
The sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky but humid as all get out - typical August day on DelMarVa!
We have known that it would most probably make landfall between Edisto and the Outer Banks, weren’t you told to evacuate? If so you should have already headed inland and south and west. The storms don’t stop on the coast, they extend inland usually north, north east and east. I’m 25 miles from the coast but in a Flash Flood area because of the rivers and marshes.

Right, and the 11am forecast discussion only addresses a possible future change:
“SOUTHWESTERLY SHEAR IS FORECAST TO INCREASE AND SEA
SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL BE GRADUALLY DECREASING. THIS SHOULD RESULT IN GRADUAL WEAKENING OF THE CYCLONE AS IT MOVES NEAR THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST.”
That’s the good news... the bad news is for North Carolina:
At 11am, the position fix was reported as 30.7N, 77.3W.
The 2pm position fix is now reported as 31.2, 77.5W.
That’s a sizable swing to the west for a storm that’s supposed to be starting toward the east. As I’ve been saying, that really puts Emerald Isle into direct play.
By 11pm, they expect 32.2N, 77.1W. We’ll see about that.

Amen. I am always amazed and saddened by the displays of absolute disregard for the workers who are trying their best to make our lives resume their comfortableness (if that is a word.)
I testified at a state legislature hearing one time about the funding for our local public utility, and used the example that we want the repairmen to be there when the need happens. We want them to be available to go to other locations to help other people, eg Louisiana or Quebec when the need arises. If the company has to work with less money, because of state regulation, they may cut back on this type of employee. Not a good idea!
This one’s different, it seems.
All the predictions match.
Prayers for all in Irene’s path...
the restaurant provided ICE (by then it was like gold)

Fill plastic containers with water and freeze them now, to make really big ice cubes. They will also keep the fridge contents cold for a longer period of time. Fill the fridge with water containers, too.
Maybe the forward speed is too great (14 miles per hour) to allow the core to build (core being disturbed by its' own forward speed).
I would say if this was in the gulf, it would be hooking it up right now.
Good graphic, thanks for posting. I’m on the east side of MA, looks like Irene is going thru the middle of the state which means being on the east side of MA and the east side of the storm we will be getting the wind, not fond of hurricane winds.
