Maybe this move is not due to health issues. Perhaps Jobs believes that it is a good time to let somebody else be CEO just to show the shareholders that he is not as indispensable as they may believe he is. The fact that he will now be chairman of the board means that he will be in position to make a change should the new CEO not work out (though it seems like TIm Cook will be just fine).

Hopefully he will get a chance to smell the roses for a while. I might disagree with his politics but his performance with Apple over the past 15 years is legendary. Taking Apple from where it was in 1997 to where it is today is probably the greatest performance of a CEO in the history of business. I do wish him well.

Truly remarkable what Jobs has done with Apple. It was a dead company in the late ‘90s. His vision created a market that other tech companies have still yet to catch up with since.

I say this as a PC user for business, but an iPhone/iPod/iTunes junkie since they all came to market in the last decade.

Son of a Gun, I live in L/V and always got tickets to the Electronic Show just to see what Steve had come up with.Well let's look at a couple of things Steve and his people have done recently. First they Passed Exxon as the world's Richest Company. Number two Apple has more money in the Bank than the U.S. Government. Like him or not you cannot argue with his success. People like him and his vision only come along every so often. He has indeed made a change for good in the lives of millions of people. Thanks Steve...There are better things ahead for you.

Apple is farked. Steve Jobs is the face of that company. He saved that company in 1999 when it was ready to collaps. For some reason when he isn't around that company goes south. I dont care who takes over for apple, there will always be doubts and comparisons.

Tomorrow apple stock will be Toxic. I'm glad I got out when I did.

My mom had pancreatic cancer and survived ten years although her body eventually succumbed to a heart attack. She was never the same after the surgery.

I pray for his family and friends as I know how difficult this will be for them. Cancer is a cruel and awful thing to endure not only for the patient but the entire family.

May God be with them all...

Sic transit. Jobs has known for years that his legacy would outlive him.

I hope that he has a chance to work as Chairman, and Cook as CEO, long enough to ride through the transient hiccup that is inevitable in the next week or so.

Any fool who thinks that Apple is doomed by this change, hasn't been paying attention the past 5 years. Jobs has been easing himself out of the position of "only guy who can run Apple" for many years. They'll do fine.

Leaving for a government gig?

That would explain those rumors of a new “Dept. of Jobs”...

I’m not sure where this has manifested itself in any media outlet or from Apple’s fans.

Apple has done nothing to show that this company is a separate and independent entity from Jobs.

They sucked royal before he came back and lacked focus when he was on medical leave.

Once he is officially done with the company, they are going to be in some serious trouble, and they all know this.

Ummm, so what? The CEO executes at the pleasure of the Board, to increase the value of the company. Damn few Apple stockholders are complaining about the performance the past few years while Cook has been running it. His sexuality has nothing to do with his ability to be CEO.

> Many have said he is just a disgusting, mean person.

Ummm, so what? As CEO, Jobs was no bluebird of happiness either. He was imperial, arbitrary, harsh, judgmental, and many other very unpleasant things. OTOH, he was RIGHT nearly all the time, and successful, and that's what counts. Cook probably runs the company in a similar vein... so what? In this business, nice CEOs rarely succeed.

You're welcome to your opinion, of course, but methinks you've got some Apple envy. You might want to reflect on that, or not, as you wish. Cheers!

Well, you may be right, or I may be right, or it may be somewhere in between. Time will tell, and since I expect to be watching and commenting on FR for many years yet, we'll have an opportunity to see how it plays out.

The current heights of the Apple stock value will take a hit, of course, but they would have plateaued anyway eventually. No reasonable person would expect it to keep rising -- at current rates -- forever. I expect it to drop twice, once in the next few days, and again when Jobs passes away. And of course the Apple fanboys will mourn his shift of responsibilities, and his eventual demise, just as any acolytes mourn the passing of their idol. So what, they are a tiny fraction of the people who buy and enjoy and respect Apple products.

I think Apple will recover from the (dual) shocks and continue on. Will it be the same? Of course not. Was Microsoft the same after Gates left? No. So what?

Anyway, we'll have a chance to see, and I don't feel like arguing about it. I acknowledge your opinion respectfully, and we can take another look in 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, etc.
