Meet Rick Perry, the Anti-Romney
The Atlantic ^ | Aug. 4, 2011 | Editorial STaff

Posted on 08/04/2011 9:06:42 AM PDT by Clairity

With potential to unite tea partiers and mainstream Republicans, party insiders say the Texas governor is a leading 2012 contender.

Republican political operatives continue to see former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the frontrunner for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, but Texas Gov. Rick Perry has become his primary challenger according the this week's National Journal Political Insiders Poll.

At the same time, some of the biggest names in the GOP have now become afterthoughts to lead the party in 2012: former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who remains a popular figure among conservative Republicans, has tumbled to eighth spot in the GOP Insiders ranking. And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the architect of the party's 1994 takeover of the House, has fallen out of the top-ten rankings altogether.

Romney's strengths remain what they have always been: his fundraising ability, the experience he gained from his losing 2008 presidential bid, the tendency of Republicans to nominate someone who has been around the track and his years running a private equity firm before he became governor which give him credibility on the economy.

How can Sarah be “stumbling” when she’s not even running yet? I don’t think she will and even when she declares she’s not they’ll include her in the polls.

More like Mitt + BBQ sauce = RINO Ricky.

I'm always concerned about these politicians with perfect hairdos. Rick seems to need endless polling data to make a decision.

Seems like we've been down that road.

Unless Perry runs, Romney will be the GOP nominee. The Perry-bashers should keep that in mind.

There is wisdom in your words. Perry and Romney are in a virtual tie on Intrade for who will win the Republican nomination, and Perry isn't even a declared candidate!

No one else, Palin and Bachmann included, is even close.

Uh, Perry was just interviewed in WHO radio in DM regarding his Christian faith and his prayer event this weekend. This guy is going to have broad appeal.

When Bush was governor, total state spending rose 13.3 percent every two years on average. Adjusting the figures for population growth and inflation, that growth rate was 2.3 percent.

Perry took the reins in December 2000. From then until 2011, spending increased an average of 16.8 percent every two years. Once adjusted for population and inflation, that rate falls to 4.2 percent. Adjusted spending figures in the just-passed 2012-13 budget are not yet available.

LOL. I understand now. I’d rather have Perry’s voice than some droning professor voice. Come to think of it, Obama’s voice reminds me of Dukakis.

And lets not forget the Texas Dream act.

Vicente Fox Thanks Rick Perry for allowing "migrants" to utilize Texas schools

Perry stands by Texas Dream act

The Atlantic editorial board? Now there’s a bastion of conservative and fiscal thought.
Will they be pulling for Romney before or after they endorse Obama?

That’s not good. Then we are screwed. We have no candidate who is both conservative and who can win at this point.

People in Texas elected him 3 times for governor.

Sarah Palin campaigned for him the last time.

Perry will not run until he knows if Palin is in or not.
And Governor Palin will get in VERY SOON...
...long before 9/3 -- when everybody else **thinks** that she will, IMHO. ;)
She has the best political instincts of ANYONE on the right...
...and is, as Andrew Breitbart says, UNPREDICTABLE.

Perry is NO McCain, not even remotely.

You either need to find out more about Perry, or stop closing your mind to facts.

Perry is a conservative, with executive experience, with positive results: low taxes, low regulations, job growth.

Why does anyone seriously think this clown has a chance? I would vote for almost any GOP candidate over him. If this is the nominee, the party deserves to go down in a flaming death and be forgotten. He is the white Obama.

For those that keep parroting the "Palin is not running" nonsense, open your eyes. She has been running since 2008. Watch the speech in Wisconsin. See the bus tour in New Hamphsire, appearances in Iowa, documentary, books and her recent appearance on Hannity. She IS and has been running for a long time. And her announcement will come at a time of her choosing.

For once the GOP primary might actually have a principled Conservative running instead of a herd of hand-picked establishment types that will not "rock the yacht." And if Perry decides to enter the fray, good for him. This Texan will be supporting Palin until further notice.

"No, I meant how he sounds - literally(his voice)."

His voice does sound similar to Bush2. Not that it has anything to do with anything btw but I've heard the two don't like each other.

"I'm always concerned about these politicians with perfect hairdos. "

So now you are discounting Perry, because he has hair?

Reagan had hair too, would that have excluded him from potential candidates you would be willing to vote for?
