Progressives and other peeved supporters of President Obama who arent happy with the all-cuts-no-revenue deal to raise the debt ceiling need to see it as the beginning of a very long (and necessary) process to get the nations fiscal house in order. But it also means that the president will have to be more aggressive in his use of presidential power. In short, I want him to use everything the bully pulpit has to offer to get what he wants, including shutting down the government if he must. After what we just went through to avert economic catastrophe, padlocking Washington aint no big thing.
Ruth Marcus runs down all the opportunities Obama will have to take a stand.
The coming crisis points are manifold. The current spending deal the one reached on the brink of government shutdown expires in September. Extended unemployment benefits run out at the end of the year. The temporary cut in the payroll tax expires.
I like the way Marcus described the harrowing drama of the last few weeks. She decried it as part of the new normal here in Washington: endless rounds of legislative carjacking where ]o]ne side wanted the car, had a gun and wasnt afraid certainly not afraid enough to use it. The other had a child in the back seat.

That a liberal-leaning columnist would encourage the President to "out-crazy the crazies" simply underscores that partisanship drives most people's judgment-making. It's deplorable, traitorous, etc., etc. for "tea partyists" to act "crazy" but it's good governing strategy for the Democratic President to do so.
Why, when we have Boner & McFossil running the show?
actually we do fear Obama. There-in lies the problem. He’s the worst scariest President we’ve ever had.
Yes I think he must SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT!
The only ones that are totally dependent on government are Obama’s constituents. The rest of us would love to see a shut down. Think of all the money we’d save!
Are liberals really this stupid? LOL!
It's very difficult to type while doing so much eye rolling over this piece. Every time he takes his arguments to the public, his polling numbers drop. Please, please do what this author recommends.
It is probably time for the Tea Party to do a massive rally in DC.
Best way to show them that we are not backing down.
Just as we have the figurative “boxes of liberty”,
the left has “boxes of power acquisition”.
We’re closing the “ballot box” on them with the Tea Party resistance. They will reach for the next box. Be aware.
My feelings exactly. Shut the dam thing down!
Another day in America run by Democrats finds 600 + new regulations, and the DOW futures down by over 100 at the pre market opening.
This is no accident, as BORROWING TOPS 100% OF GDP is no accident.
He had better fear the people who make up the TEA Partys, All Democrats should.
I guess Zero being on TV every freaking day is not enough bully pulpit for this lib.
But maybe having Obama aggressively in people faces (particularly lecturing to the unemployed) is not a bad idea.
In fact, early in his presidency (i.e., many jobs ago) I remember him instructing his minions that they needed to aggressively get into people faces.
more like...
"Time for Obama to fear the Tea Party!"
“....arent happy with the all-cuts-no-revenue deal to raise the debt ceiling”
Alternate universe time - and yes, I know most folks here get it - but I am so tired of this being spun as a defeat for Obama! It was a defeat for the Tea Party - because “the deal” gave Obama everything he wanted!!!
Gah!
It is long past time to Primary every one of those ensconced, self serving elites, euphemistically known as our “Representatives”.
May God give us the strength.

Oh please don't throw us in the briar patch.
Also, the writer demonstrates a severe lack of understanding of what motivates the tea party (and I mean the TRUE tea party folks, not the ones that pay lip service every now and then). The tea party will never "fear" Obama and be cowed into submission by him, because they don't care about the things that motivate most politicians. They are in Washington to balance the budget, eliminate the deficit and lower taxes. They are not there to win popularity contests, be loved by the media, get a bunch of pork funneled to their districts, or worry about their approval rating and reelect numbers.
“In short, I want him to use everything the bully pulpit has to offer to get what he wants, including shutting down the government if he must. After what we just went through to avert economic catastrophe, padlocking Washington aint no big thing.”
So rare I find myself agreeing with one of them.
