It seems to be the new talking point: The deal is a victory for conservatives not because of what it does (which is, not much!), but because it supposedly represents a change in the direction of the debate. Once, Washington discussed what to grow. Now, Washington discusses what to cut. Even former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has echoed the theme — but with qualifications. The Wall Street Journal Washington Wire reports:
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Monday’s House vote to lift the debt ceiling was a victory for the tea party, proving that conservative activists had shifted the conversation in Washington.
“We shall take this victory and make sure our politicians in office today are learning from this victory,” Ms. Palin said Monday night on Fox News, where she is a paid contributor. “It’s not a 100% pure genuine victory. We just handed the most liberal president, I believe, in U.S. history a $2.4 billion debt increase.” …
Ms. Palin didn’t fully embrace the deal, saying she had plenty of problems with the compromise between the White House and congressional leaders, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner. In the past, the former governor said she was not convinced America would face a default if lawmakers did not raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2.
Meanwhile, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of the founders of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress (along with GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann), says the deal can’t possibly be touted as a win.
“The Tea Party is not calling this a victory,” Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said today on Fox News. “I’m certainly not.”

Well think of it this way. How bad would it have been had the House been Pelosi’s. I agree it is not great and I know there are a lot of land mines in the bill. But the victory comes not in the bill it self but in the attention that was paid to the debt. It gives the Tea Party something to run on in 2012. It gives solid footing for those that want to primary out the RINOs.
Not the solid victory I would liked to have seen, but with the number of RINOs in office - well, better the devil you see than the one you dont.

Well I don't think I would classify shifting a conversation as a victory but in that respect she is right, the debt would have never been an issue if not for the TP.
We still have much work to do, don't think we have enough time though.
Bachmann voted against the Debt Ceiling, Palin sees it as a positive. How the Republican electorate ends up viewing the deal will determine which will carry the consevative wing.

This is as much of a victory we can hope for in 2011. The GOP controls one half of one branch of government. Now, in 2012 and 2013 on the other hand, we can hope for much more.

It’s only a victory in that (imho) Obama and the Democrats set an artificial deadline to create a crisis so they would have an excuse to raise taxes.
The fact that the conversation was all focused on cutting spending was a victory for the tea party, a small one, but still a victory.
OTOH, the actual deal is still awful. It just raised the debt ceiling, officially added another 7 trillion dollars to the debt, and gave Obama a blank check to play with until after the election. Hardly a victory in that sense.
In this case, Palin is wrong.

I won’t call her a RINO, but between that comment and Bachman’s stellar performance and VOTES during this debate, I know know where my support solidly sits.
