Well this is it folks.. It has been a fun ride.
It is a shame that I didn't get to see those birds launch in person. Oh well should have moved to Florida.
Thanks ScottinVA.
Good point. It's actually not even as political as you describe it. There are uncountable billions of dollars to be made harvesting solar power in space and beaming it back to earth; in fact it is the only way that solar energy will ever be profitable. Think of the impact on the energy market! But think ALSO that the power beam from the orbiting array would be an incomparable weapon, a giant magnifying glass in the sky. It follows that virtually any technology that could make space profitable could also be used to make a game-changing superweapon. A weapon that would be in private hands.
No wonder the Govern-weenies want to regulate space travel!
Our spacefaring future, if it ever comes, is going to be very interesting.
Wow, those pictures are works of art!
Even in the article that I had posted early this morning does agree with you, to an extent, from a former space veteran himself, John Glenn:
“Some space veterans like John Glenn, the first American in orbit, think five to 10 years is more realistic.”
Would not surprise me if that is true also.
Tell me, me too! I feel older today!
I had kept the live video on for a little while longer, just for one last look. Sad end to a era.
I look forward to the day that they board that Airforce #1 for the last time come January 20, 2013 are FORMER President and First Lady.
We HAVE “October Sky”. They’ve seen it.
The difference is: the main character lived in the Age of Von Braun, when America wanted to do things in space.
We live in the Age of Obama...where most of America wants to do nothing.
Sorry...I’m a bit on the bitter side this morning.
AMEN to that!
For now at least.
RE Reagan:
You know, I have a CD of Reagan’s speeches, starting with the the 1964 speech for Barry Goldwater and ending with his farewell address.
I listen to it whenever I need to be reminded of a what a REAL American President should sound like.
Mr. Reagan was my first election. Looking back, it was such a monumental time to BE an American.
This feckless douchebag POS that we have now reflects the national myopia and deliberate stupid-izing of the country.
The left has been very successful - only because we did nothing to cause them to cease and desist.
“...We live in the Age of Obama...where most of America wants to do nothing...”
No, not most of the country, Hoagy...just a small, useless, subversive and insane minority that want to watch everything burn.
There’s still Americans here. And they’re waking up. Slowly, ponderously, maybe even a little unwillingly, but they’re waking up.
And when they finally do wake up, we’ll throw that subversive lunatic fringe out the effing window into the sh*tpile of historical manure that they crawled out of -right where they belong.
Thank you. *blush*
I can also add, to all the naysayers, they will be in for a BIG surprised come next November, 2012.
“Instead of living in a new Great Age of Exploration, I get to live in the First Age of Navel Gazing.”
Lol so true. Kids today think they are so technologically savvy, if they only knew we dreamed a lot bigger back then.
He’s probably can’t wait for his next trip to Russia so he can receive his Order of Lenin for making us beholden to the Russians to get into space.
My sense of loss today is something I was not expecting.
I too feel 'old' today.
I woke early this morning to the familiar, but still startling, twin sonic boom as she passed over the state of Florida. It took me about 30 seconds to realize what it was, and then, sadly, I informed my wife that that would be the last time we ever heard that sound. R.I.P Shuttle program.
