The flood photo that isn’t

AP news service issues ‘kill notice’ for image from North

July 20, 2011

North Korea claimed that seven North Koreans are walking in a flooded street in this July 15 photo North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency took, which it provided to AP. In the photo, residents walk in knee-deep water, but photo experts suspect the photo of being retouched, citing the relatively dry clothes of the residents as evidence. [YONHAP]

The Associated Press has withdrawn a photo depicting flooding in North Korea, released recently by the reclusive communist country’s news service, claiming that signs of digital manipulation were detected.

The American news wire agency transmitted the photo to its members and customers on Saturday. “In this photo taken Friday, July 15, 2011, and released Saturday July 16, 2011, by the Korean Central News Agency via Korea News Service, residents wade through a flooded street in Pyongyang, North Korea. North Korea said heavy rains flooded farmland, destroyed homes and caused some deaths,” the AP said in the caption.

The Korean Central News Agency is a state-run mouthpiece of the North.

The day after the photo’s release, the AP issued a “kill notice” to tell subscribers that AP decided to withdraw the photo and no longer stood by it.

“The content of this image has been digitally altered and does not accurately reflect the scene,” AP said in the kill notice. “No other version of the photo is available.”

I’m not sure it’s retouched, but looking to the right, I see what looks like the bank of a river.

I think this group was just “volunteered” to wade out into the water so the photog could get the shot. They didn’t want to get any wetter than they had to.

It’s badly photoshopped. I’ve used photoshop since 1990-91, used it for 14 years professionally. That’s fairly obvious poor work. For the good stuff, see worth1000.

FYI, Chosun Ilbo carried this close examination of the said photo. I am not a photoshop expert so I wouldn't know if the paper got everything 100% correct. Perhaps you can look at it.

The one thing going for the photo is that they are all looking down like they are actually walking in high water.

The photog simply asks the subjects to look down in order make the end product look more convincing.

There are no eddies or wave diffraction around the inserted elements.

Let me ask a dumb question.

What do the NORKs gain by sending out fake flood pics?

Are they expecting some sympathy from the “world”?

Are they expecting some sympathy from the “world”?

Sympathy followed by relief aid(especially food.) Their troops do not have enough to eat.

It’s badly, badly photoshopped. The guy with the bike is clearly not in the water.

I do this for a living. It’s as big a lie as a Media Matters press release.

AP sold what little soul they may have had for access to North Korea.
