The guest list for Rick Perry's August 6 day of prayer won't include many U.S. governors.
Only two governors, both Republican, plan to join Perry at the event at Houston's Reliant Stadium, which Perry has labeled as a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting. Perry invited all of his fellow U.S. governors to the event.
Just two - Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal - have accepted the invitation.
Mark P. Jones, a government professor at Rice University, said he is not surprised by the lukewarm response.
"For a Democrat there is nothing to be gained by attending, and politically its best for them to quietly decline," he said. He added that even for Republicans, being associated with an exclusively Christian prayer event could hurt them among moderate supporters, and attending the event could mar their reputation if a speaker says something scandalous.
But he said he doubts Perry will have trouble filling the venue, which seats 71,500, with religious supporters.

What bothers me is that Governors apparently lack courage in choosing not to attend, according to some. Michigan’s economy has been circling the drain for several YEARS longer than the other 49. Last election we were given a choice between a fiscally savvy businessman and a socialist career politician. I didn’t vote for Governor Snyder because I think he is a man of faith, I voted for him because my beloved state is in desperate need of a leader who will deal with our full plate. Courage has nothing to do with it, as far as I’m concerned.
It's a mistake to think that a "typical Texas Democrat" was conservative. White trash and other backward elements in TX enthusiastically supported New Dealers like Ralph Yarborough and LBJ (who was falsely perceived as being to the right of JFK, for some reason), until oil wealth, immigration, and education brought prosperity to TX. Just because Rick Perry affects the mannerisms of a hick doesn't mean he is deeply conservative. TX is very sophisticated politically.
And remember that Slick Rick went all through the Reagan years, the glorious heyday of conservatism, as a happy member of the corrupt, kleptocratic, welfarist, socialist, Demonrat Party. He only changed in order to enhance his political future.
There are only two choices: Either Perry saw Algore as someone like himself--a shape-changing poseur of a career politician--or Perry is a dope who can't reliably judge human character (a catastrophic failing in a leader). The same thing applies to Perry's support of Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.

This is the man Slick Rick Perry considered the most qualified to be POTUS. Perry was Gore's campaign manager in Texas. Perry was a middle-aged man at the time, so this can't be dismissed as some kind of youthful indiscretion.

I’m not spinning a damn thing. He was a democrat reprsentative in Texas and in the 1988 democrat primary he supported Gore. The other choices were, Gephardt, Dukakis, Jackson, Simon, and Hart. Down south the Republican party was small until the democrats begin the process of joining the Republican party.
It wasn’t until 2002 that Texas Republicans gained a majority in the state House. That set up the mid term Congressional redistricting that finally gave Texas a majority of Republicans 21 to 11 democrats. Prior to that the democrats controlled the delegation 17-15.

You have it backwards — he had no intention of running for president. People started to ask him and encouraging to run, after they took a look at the current candidates (with the more and more likely scenario of Palin not running) and concluded that none of them have a chance of beating Obama, while Perry has a job creating record that would play well against Obama, as well as Perry being a fiscal and social conservative.
He went around checking out his chances, before making a decision, unlike many of the current candidates who jumped in without assessing their chances, which are nil for most of them.
It disgusts me to see Perry compared to Reagan. Reagan studied politics and read about economics, in which he majored in college (where Perry studied "animal science"). It was only after Reagan became conservative that he entered politics. He spoke eloquently on behalf of Goldwater, even though Barry was already doomed at that point. That's precisely the opposite of Perry, who held prominent offices, then waited until it was safe to switch to "Republican" once it was clear that being a Demonrat was not the best bet for a career politician in TX. Even decades after switching, he endorsed candidates who were Demonrat in all but name.
It also disgusts me to see him credited with economic and job growth in Texas. Herman Cain has actually generated wealth and given people jobs; Rick Perry never has. What has he ever done, outside of his govt. employment?
It's too bad that so many are not aware that most politicians are sociopaths and display "sociopathic charm." They are like used-car salesmen, and will tell you what you want to hear. I look not for outward displays of piety, but for evidence of correct choice when no one is looking and no credit is given. When left to his own devices, this so-called conservative Rick Perry supported Rudolf Giuliani, who is so far left that the label Republican becomes an outright joke.

We know that she is a citizen-politician, that she fought the Republican establishment in her state. She is not a career political hack!
So if Sarah Palin has a prayer breakfast that’s great, but if Perry has one, it’s “politically motivated”.

No, because Palin has lived out her beliefs, and so have Bachmann and Cain. Perry is just a career politician who sees an opportunity to move ahead. Your man Perry is the hypocrite.
